I'm glad I'm not the only one that felt the organisation of this race was not up to expected standards.

As a rookie, doing my first 100km + race, I always knew it was going to be a battle. And I must thank the sweeping vehicle for not picking me up after I tried to wave them down after about 75km's. Without you I would have not been able to complete 102km.

It would have been nice to complete the 102km along the scheduled route and cross the finishing line, but instead I found myself at the bottom of the HILL we went down from the start. I'm glad to hear that was not a rookie mistake, but that other people were also misdirected. Actually witnessed it at the 60km split, so were not to surprised when water point/ recovery team drove passed us and said we missed the turn that was about 10km back.

Due to the lack of oxygen in my head I decided the shortest route back to the car would be up the HILL. Made it past the Engen Garage when a fellow cyclist on his way home by car left his wife and bike by the side of the road to give me a lift up the HILL.

After going the distance not passing the finishing line, not having a official time recorded, all due to poor organising makes me feel that I did not get what I paid for.

Coffee, I feel your pain.

Have done 5 or more 100km+ rides with buddies/club/solo, and none of that prepared me for what happened that day. My legs totally concked out at about 75km (only the right leg, strangely). Had to stop so often just to massage and rub, but to almost no avail. USN Cramp block, what a rubbish product...

Was so disappointed with myself because I knew I was heading for a 3:15, 3:20, no problem, hill or not.

Any of the more experiences hubbers out there, what could I potentially have done wrong for my legs to give up on me like they did? I drank sufficient liquids before and during the race, I take magnesium supplements and I had a usual breakfast. I slept a good 8 hours before, I drink upwards of 2L H20 per day.

Assistance will be appreciated ladies/gents. Will be doing R4V on the 21st which is my "home" race and I desperately want to do >30km/h average.

Are there any hubbers who rode in AL, rode with a power meter, weigh about 70-75, and kept with the group? If yes woyld you be prepared to share race file. I got dropped and want to see what kind of power numbers i need to target to be able to keep up.

I rode AL and I was extremely disappointed with the race. The downhill start was dangerous, the marshals were non existent and the route was terrible! There are enough f*cking flat races in joburg, we don't need another one...

Last years route was much better!

For the entry fee, it's a joke! No signs out on the route, no directions. Finish was poorly organized...

Myself and a lot of my friends who ride competitively will never be back. This race was a joke and should be removed from the race calendar.

The new Strava Labs Flyby is useful for finding other riders that were in the same group: http://labs.strava.com/flyby

Strava AL riders that were with the bunch at Tarlton: Those with power meter data have a * next to them.

(Surprised how few have power meters. Maybe they do, but don't publish the data.)

But my-o-my there were some tedious/bring bits, stretched miles and miles with no references as to where you are or where you're heading.

I used to have that problem with most races. Since I have been making my route videos, I always know where I am, and what's coming up. http://garyvdm.co.za/ I'll do one for you for R4V asap.

The wind was worse than you think... so you effectively were pushing harder than normal to maintain your ride average .. Your muscles can only take so much before popping (lactate threshold exceeded)

For future reference : this route shares MANY km with the Wilro race.

Not sure from your post. Are you saying you had a cramp? In what muscle?

If this is the case, there are many different cause of cramp (and often multiple working in combination.) Here is some good info: http://www.thehubsa....w-ive-read-yet/

Yip, especially in a cross wind with a group that does not form an echelon, or if you are in the gutter. In this case, you may as well be riding on you own.

Perhaps less climbing vs. earlier years, but this race was still tough!! Found the marshalling to be in line with other races - perhaps our bunch was just lucky? Happy with how my race went, will be back next year.

Last year my garmin registered over 1100 metres and this year I had just over 900 metres.

Thanks a lot

I have just seen that I averaged almost the same power as the 2nd place in A. I clearly need to loose weight, and fast. I had a higher average than both of the power meter files up all the climbs, except at the end where I was hammered.

I'm chomping at the bit to say something (even though I didn't enter this event) :whistling:

But there's no need... many are sharing their comments/thoughts from the race.

Looking at the results, barely scraping over the 1100-mark for "timed" finishers (102Km) and <500 (60Km).

At R300 per person * 1600 finishers = R493K (excluding sponsor contributions)

No wonder there was very little infrastructure in place - not enough moola
