I said I'd never buy a road bike.........

So about a month after I started mtb'ing (about a year ago) I can remember thinking and saying to my wife, why would anyone want to ride on the road, mtb'ing is so much more rewarding.

So as I brace myself for the torrent of comments that are surely to follow, I have found myself looking for a road bike. Mainly because my wife needs a cycling partner as she trains for IM 70.3, but also because the few short rides I have done on the road with my MTB have been not at all bad.

I must say that one aspect of choosing a bike that is confusing me is what size to go for. I have inputted many bodily measurements into an array of website fitment programs and have not once gotten the same result. All seem to vary from 56-60cm, does that 4cm really make a difference, or will any bike within that range be ok?

Also, as I don't know how long this sudden love of road riding will last, so I am looking for something cheap, really cheap.... I have seen some old bikes in the classified section and also on the unspoken of gumtree for around the R1000 to R3000 mark, has technology change so much in the past 15 years that I will notice a major difference between a bike that old and one of the last few years?

Lastly, should anyone have a nice road bike standing around at home gathering dust, please list it, cheaply :whistling: :whistling:

I had my Raleigh RC 6000 listed a few weeks ago. Not a hit! If you are interested, let me know, I will see if I can revive the ad somehow and then I'll post a link.

Is the inside leg from the bottom of the ummm..."tjommals" straight down to the ground or don the side of the leg to the ground?

The same method described here.

http://www.cube.eu/en/service/faq/faq-detail/article/how-do-i-determine-the-correct-frame-size/

Remember, only an indication to start. If your torso is shorter than "normal" you may end up stretching too much and after three or so hours on the road it becomes a problem . So take a frame size smaller i.e from 56 to 54.

Best is to go to your local bike shop for advice after they have "assessed" your body build.

there are plenty of a few select guys in the starting groups with mtbs that finish with the front slow guys on road bikes.

Fixed it.

I've seen some mtb's start in A and B, but never seen any that finish "with the front guys"

I got a road bike for the exact same reason with the same attitude towards road bikes.

I have however evolved somewhat and really enjoy my roadbike, even so I'm counting grams when upgrading (but don't tell my MTB mates).

On the roadbike I found that even small upgrades makes a big difference in the comfort and overall ride.

My main suggestions are

1. get a proper fitment done or make 100% sure what size you need.

2. try and spend a bit more to make sure you are comfortable on the bike, i promise you'll like it (again don't tell my MTB mates)

Raydek, try this for a guide, 1 or 2 cm can make a big difference, so make sure you start with the right size.

I'm spot on according to this

172 = 54

After 4.5 years just doing MTB I just got my 1st road bike - Lapierre Sensium 400. To me road is not as exciting as MTB but the physical challenge is attractive. Nice to be able to mix it up a bit, road one day, MTB the next. You can always justify getting a road bike by also using it on an indoor trainer. Think sizing can differ by brand, I'm 186 on a size 55. Do a BG fit or similar, to ensure size is correct

Yep, you get a few animals that can keep up with the road bikes for a while, but for the most part they just get in the way when the pace increases.

Nothing wrong with doing a road race on a mtb just for the heck of it but if you wan't to get the proper experience buy a road bike.

Been using my MTB for road races up till now. My next door neighbour just lent me his 80's model Eddy Merckx with an upgrades 105 groupset for the rest of the year while i save up to buy a roadie for myself. Guess i'll have the proper experience soon enough.

My kind of guy. Got rid of my mtb several years ago, and don't miss that dirty thing at all.

There's nothing like the feeling of being on a decent road bike, especially when the speed kicks up.

If only we could get rid of the careless arseholes in cars who are trying to kill us......
