Nope, it made them super hot.

My godmother's one went up in flames twice. :P

First car was a Beetle. Also became a pyrotechnic one night on the N12 near the Mall.

Renault Gordini

Not my first car, my 4th!!!!

Bought it with my 21st birthday money and what I'd saved.

Most of the stories you've heard are true. Engine in the back, so incredibly light in the front, but 2 fuel tanks, one in front, which I used to keep full (petrol was only about 15c a litre), for the weight. Five main bearings and 1500cc, the beauty revved to 8000 and would beat almost anything 0 to 100 km/h.

Aaaah, eventually blew a gudgeon pin and was too lazy to fix her, so I sold her. Idiot!!!!

Obviously not this baby, but looked exactly the same.

Don't think my dad had any pics of his, before my time, but when I was a kid we had two of these... Renault 16TS.

One my dad owned, the other his company car. Column shift, first FWD car my dad owned, if I recall correctly. Very very comfortable seats and comfortable in general. Know my dad loved them.

My dad also owned one (mustard colored).

If I'm not mistaken it set the trend towards hatchback cars. That 1600cc engine was incredibly willing, and later powered the Lotus Europa.

Remember watching these compete at Kyalami in the hands of Scamp Porter and Puddles Adler.

Then some kid named Jody Scheckter showed up in a turbo-charged version that was so quick the front-end kept lifting off down that long main straight. Very sideways through Clubhouse corner too (maybe that's where he got the nickname from).

Correct on all counts. My dad created a box out of metal which sat under the dash and housed his (then) 8 track followed by radio tape and graphic equaliser, along with speakers he fitted into the doors. he would have loved this era of buying a car with a built in hifi system off the showroom floor.

And I bet your hearing never quite recovered from the straight cut gears in the gearbox.....

Haha, it made a hell of a noise for sure. My sister always asked my old man to drop her off around the corner from school :P

Mate of mine sold this recently

We had a yellow one like that when i was at school. Nicknamed the yellow submarine, it went everywhere and carried everything from garden refuse to the dump, muddy soccer/rugby players home after the game and our family on our annual holiday to the Cape from Jozzie.

It was the car i learnt to drive first and also the car i would "borrow" to visit my mates when the folks were out

I'd like to give my son something like a Land Rover or a Jeep, something that he can work on, and will have to work on, hopefully instilling a mechanical sympathy and the knowledge to fix things himself..

Shame man. Have some mercy on him........

That will either make him or break him re working on cars himself....
