Johannesburg - A cyclist died after falling off his bicycle outside Amsterdam, near Ermelo, on Sunday, Mpumalanga paramedics said.

"It is understood that a group of cyclists were cycling on the Lothair-Amsterdam Road... when one of them experienced mechanical problems and fell off his bicycle," ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said.

It was believed that his head hit the road as he fell.

When emergency services arrived, the cyclist, believed to be in his 40s, was in a critical condition.

Bystanders told paramedics that the man started having seizures shortly after falling from his bicycle. "It is believed that he went into cardiac arrest shortly before emergency services arrived on the scene," Vermaak said.

"Paramedics tried for some time to revive him, but sadly were unable to regain a pulse."

Strength to the cyclists family and friends...

I wonder if he was wearing a helmet, if he was it must have been quite an impact :-(

This may not necessarily be the case.

I won't mention names, but one of the guys who raced tandems with us - a very experienced cycling shop owner - was out for a ride with a lady a few years ago now, and riding very slowly when he apparently tippled over, fell off and hit his head. A very silly little incident. He was wearing a decent helmet.

He died in hospital a few days later from a brain injury sustained during the fall.

Sh*t luck. Very sh*t luck. A helmet cannot guarantee to protect you from injury, no matter how 'innocuous' the incident. All it can do is reduce the odds and (hopefully) the severity of an injury.

Best wishes and thoughts to this cyclist's family and friends...
