I think we need collectively need to do something..like the sit down in London....maybe we should all sit down in front of parliament before one session starts....1000 cyclists and their bikes sitting in front of the gates of parliament will surely raise awareness

I read this post with shock at 05h30 this morning before going to spinning .

We dont know the facts sure will become available.

Terrible !

But we as cyclists must also think . On my way to spinning before 6 this morning at the end of Tygervalley rd which is unlit I saw a roadie in black kit with no reflectors or lights .

Hijack off.

Sad news indeed, RIP cyclist.

Anybody knows if this was an "cyclist" out training, or a commuter on his way to work?

That road is getting busier all the time, both cars and cyclist. Can only see it getting even worse when the Okavango Blvd extension is opened up, lots of people will be using that route then.

More and more trucks is also using the road now.

This is terrible news. Being a victim of a hit and run accident myself a week ago, it fills me with sadness and frustration. I love road cycling and I promised myself that I will get back on the road as soon as I am healed, but I am seriously starting to doubt myself. What can we do? I have seen small bunches on the road lately with a car following them and I thought to myself that it might irritate motorists even more, but maybe that is one way of doing it.

Johan Schoeman of Eversdal, leaves behind a wife and 2 daughters in primary school.

Don't have any details yet on what happened but apparently hit and run  :cursing:

I passed the spot this morning, evidence of the accident still there, not a pretty sight.

RIP Johan! To echo what others have said already. This is getting too sad...

Is it just me or are we seeing this type of thread far more frequently?? Why is that? Because we 'hear' about more of these through the reaches of social media or is there genuinely a spike in cycling related accidents??

I hope the driver is caught, prosecuted and the family is able to lay civil charges for financial compensation. Maybe when drivers start going to jail and/or have their assets repossessed there will be a collective movement to consider other road users when driving.

Wannabe this was a "guy like us" out there training, and it happened close to the Abramskraal turn-off so it is on a more quiet section with a yellow line & wide shoulder (away from the usual Phisantekraal commuter traffic where admittedly things sometimes can get a bit dodgy)

RIP Johan

I'm not sure how true it is, but apparently someone was hit on Brackenfell Boulevard this morning too. Nothing serious is seems.

It has to stop!!!!

Such terrible news. Ride there pretty often. I often think to myself how many times can I dodge the bullet till it happens to me? For 20 odd years I have been relatively unscathed. How many times have I had close calls without even being aware? Flippen sad man! Can't help but picture those poor kids being called out of class to hear the news their father is no longer alive. Sh!t so many people effected today by one persons action. RIP Johann & condolences to the family

I love my roadbike and the feeling of that fresh morning air and sunrise, but i dont think its worth it to risk someone phoning my young wife and telling her that she is now without a husband. This really makes my hair stand on end...... so i am putting my roadbike up for sale, 61cm specialized venge pro with sram force. 2012. Spotless. PM me

AS I HAVE IT. The bakkie that clipped Johan drove off. Another vehicle apparently turned around and managed to get the reg nr.  Regarding the Brackenfell incident, the lady in the maroon tazz also drove on. Apparently they also managed to get her reg nr. :cursing:  :cursing: :cursing:  :cursing:
