Performance enhancing substances among amateurs

OK please excuse my absolute ignorance bordering on stupidity here but do they test your average Joe doing a race for the experience and a bit of fun? Those nowhere near a podium and happy at the back. I kind of presumed they only test the pros etc.

In the United States where Kayle LeoGrande raced as Cat 1, they test Cat 3's and up. Cat 3's usually have some racing experience but are nowhere near pro level.

That being said i believe the UKAD recently (in the last 18 months) banned a couple of fun riders after they tested positive at some gran fondos. Memory is hazy on this one but I will see if I can dig it up.

Interestingly it takes a metric **** ton of caffeine to breach the limit as laid out by the NCAA (which I think is currently the only sporting body which treats it as a banned substance - but I might be mistaken).

In order for the NCAA to take action you would need to exceed 15 micrograms per mililiter of urine. Which approximates to 8 cups of coffee within the 2 hours preceding testing.

would be more concerned about the alcohol and pain killer volumes. No wait, that does not sound right......

I think it depends on the UCI rating of the event.

A hubber was bust and he was a middle of the bunch kinda ride (if I remember). But he earned my respect by admitting he did it and explained why and reasons etc etc. And of course he accepted his ban. Changed my views on doppers alot. Especially those on the not so sharp end of the categories and more participatory.

Good Lord, you make it sound like you have ample access to horse tranquilisers! I fear my little pooches may actually be calm by osmosis in your office...

One of the better reactions to being caught I can recall even if he wasn't trying to be a mountain goat.

He was a bodybuilder and then got asked to do the ACE. Stopped juicing when he got the call up, but still had traces in his system while participating in the ACE and got pinned IIRC.

A more interesting question would be what stuff would I take/not take if I was chasing my 6 - 7 hr PB's.

A number of people (an unquantified value) think doping makes one faster, when it's better used as a recovery aid. The quicker one can recover, the sooner one can train again. It's almost a cycle of train, recover, repeat... but much quicker than how nature intended us to recover. Basically get stronger and then race well, recover, repeat!

At least that's the message coming from the former dopers that have confessed (think Hincapie, Hamilton, etc.

Back to your question:

Caffeine can certain help - I'm not a medically know-it-all, so the technical answer can found on Google, or from a doc. But it basically fools your brain into thinking you're not getting tired, so you can push on a little harder. Some technical words are receptors, adenosine, dopamine and glutamate.

You can take a caffeine product that you add to a bottle of water, and drink it about an hour before you need the "boost". It's not illegal (as you have already mentioned), but I wonder how much has a placebo effect, vs. a real effect?

BTW, Spinnekop definitely races.

I know you say race, but do you race or do you participate ?

I know for a fact that if they tested me as Mr BackMarker, I would be Dq'ed foreva! Mostly from caffeine or maybe some alcohol remnants, possible pseudoephedrine, maybe a pain killer or three. Technically, I should not be on the start line. But in reality I am just along for the ride and placement does not mean a thing.

Definitely race!! He is a member of one of the better, bigger vet team that almost always have someone on the podium and spidey is often one of those guys. He is a monster on that cannondale. I sometimes get to chat to him in the main group and its always a good chat. Except now he is too old for my group

So those cold winter rides where you actually have coffee in a flask for consumtion during the ride?

Might create a positive result??? :D

I think mr Kittel gets his caffeine directly from his hair products... Wonder how long till they add those to the banned list

Agree fully!!! I'm not close to the podium places, so I've never been asked for a sample. But I've never seen doping control at any of the races I've done.

Exactly, and as always if there isn't policing, there will be more chance takers....

Maybe we should pitch at a VETs Race in white Lab Coats with a few test tubes and see who scatters like meerkats when they see an bird of prey. ????????????

The funny thing is that just about every time I have heard they where at a race testing the guys, they have caught someone. The last time I heard of them testing the vets was the engen race in PTA 2 years ago and that's when Joe got bust.

I suspect we will see him back in the VA group soon because I saw him out training a few weeks ago and I think his ban ends soon.
