The "I hate Specialized" Bandwagon...... what's the deal?

Hey, I have an idea....

If you don't like Specialized bikes, parts, clothes, shops or how they conduct business DONT support them!

Thats the awesome thing about a free market, we can choose who we spend money on and who not.

If Spez keeps pissing people off, they WILL lose market share... simple.

But their market share is still growing, so from a shareholder perspective they will keep rolling out this strategy until returns start slowing. Its called BUSINESS!! Not on a little LBS level but on a global scale.

As for the Bridge vs Spez thing, I am sure there were legal binding contracts in place. They are big boys, I am sure they can handle this themselves. If they cannot, well are they cut out to work in a changing industry? Look how quick Cyclefunatic turned themselves around.

Trying to justify your hatred for a brand by latching onto something like the Bridge thing is very transparent, many of the guys bashing the brand here were doing so before the Bridge thing even came up.... just saying.

No man, I love specilazed skoene and saddles and some of their bikes. Its the brand slut thing I find comical...

Bicycles, all we need them for is to keep fit, take us from A-B, makes us feel like kids again and all of it with the least possible hassle and fuss.

That's all.

Aaaahhhh so its the people who buy it who annoy you, not the brand itself, their crap bikes or the way they conduct business thats the issue?

You see the dilemma, there are so many "justifications" for why they are *** that have popped up in this thread that it all seems rubbish after a while. Some people hate simply because its cool to be anti cool

1. Crap bikes? Well compare them like Wyatt suggested.

2. Over priced? Same as above.

3. Accessories, helmets shoes. Same as above.

4. Casual clothes. Yip they have a big range, you struggle to find other brands casual clothes, walk into Concept store an its all there, easy to buy etc.

5. Concept Stores? Seems other are starting to follow, means that this model works from a strategic level? Is is sustainable in the current for, not so sure.

6. How they conduct business? Well that has come into question a few times. Dont like it? Then dont support it, if it was illegal it would be shut down.

As for the Brand Slut issue, well thats a bit more of a debatable topic.

Most of my stuff is Spez, this is because my first bike was a Spez (I actually wanted a Cannondale super Six) ended up getting a Tarmac at a steal. I then started going to the nearest Spez shop to get it looked at, Concept store in Fourways, built up a good relationship with Ricky and them and since they had all the other things I needed right on hand... well that made the purchase easy. Now most of my stuff is Spez, did I buy it because of the brand, no. Am I labeled a brand whore now? Sometimes... Do I care? Not really. Will I look at other brands when I buy a new bike, of course!

Not bad? Huh? Thats a well used piece of not very practical mountain bike. Great if all you do is gravel roads and tar but why not buy a Giant Anthem and a road bike and still have bucks left over for a bike rack, top box, canoe, holiday away to ride etc etc...

I'd still buy it.

I don't want an Anthem and I have all the other things you mentioned.

Each to its own.

So if Spaz take the option of complete control of their brand locally, will the prices go up? Does it open the gap for a parallel distributor at lower prices?

I'm thinking what a certain three letter bike shop did with a certain five letter bike wheel. bring in your own stock, sell it way cheaper than the official distributor and support it with your own warrantee. Give them the finger if/when they take you to court.

maybe the idea is a bit far fetched.

Specialized international will not deal with you for starters  ;)

I honestly believe that those who are spewing vitriol and bile about the concept stores issue are missing the point.

Specialized SA wants to create a uniform brand experience for all customers (new and existing). However, these stores can't exist in a vacuum and must be put in place by having an existing LBS "converted".

HOWEVER, those stores that are revamped to Spez concept (or elite) stores still maintain their own individual identity and character. It is the people that make the store, not the brand.

Case in point: I bought my Spez from Complete Cyclist in Bryanston. I have a good relationship with the guys and gals, have always received excellent service and know that I can drop Mike a mail if I ever need anything. Does the fact that they are a Spez elite store make them corporate sell-outs or anything along those lines? No. The store still revolves around their staff and customer base.

To all the haters: if your favourite LBS tells you tomorrow that they'll be converting to a Spez concept store, would you write them off? If so, you need to have a long look at your priorities in life.

On a sidenote: I love the Specialized brand, but that doesn't preclude me from considering all other brands when making a purchase (I would love to buy a racing hardtail from Silverback(.

Renovation costs is much higher. They are going ahead with it without spec. C29er is way off on the three years. The insistence of the segregated store only started at the end of last year according to bridge. 4 mins later spec pulled the plug.

I think you're only believing what you want to believe. Sorry GoLefty, you're fighting someone else's battle here without the appropriate knowledge.

I know neither the guys at Specialized nor the guys at Bridge but to believe the "end of last year" stuff when every other Spesh dealer in the country was aware of the impending upgrade requirements years ago gives credibility to Zuma's insistence he knew nothing about the Nkandla upgrades.
