yeah, depending on which car you use, that can work out to approx. R 50 per person. If you have a fuel muncher, that can go up to R 75 per person.

Sure but if you measure quality single track vs rand spent I think you'll find that Jonkers still wins out. Even if you drive a Dodge Viper.

I'm just saying what I do. I refuse to pay R60 to ride Tokai. And I'm on the committee. But I also don't advocate rogue riding.

I've just paid R1000 to renew my Steilte membership and I'll be paying an annual for Jonkers too very soon. Sanparks's approach to us has told me in no uncertain terms that they don't want my money. So I'll give it to someone who does.

We ARE apathetic !!

FACT

Permits cost too much.

Race entries are a ripoff.

Equipment is over the top.

Kit is ridiculously priced.

And we just roll over.

I think I'm going to try golf.

Google apathetic.

And you think golf is cheaper?

Yeah. Honestly, I'd find it VERY easy to motivate the extra R 15 over Tokai if I were a day visitor to both.

Plus the cold frosties at Ride in and the solid chance of Spotting Ariaan Kleinhans in her very fetching riding attire.

Rather don't

I know someone who's been charged in Cecilia Forest for night riding. They use the same legislation to charge you as what they use to charge Rhino poachers Which if you pay the admission of guilt fine results in a criminal record.

Thanks for answering my question Omega, I figured they would use poacher vibes. Been arrested for trespassing before and had to pay the guilt fine, didnt result in a criminal record :) thankfully. I buy an activity card each year as it makes sense and thanks for the Jonkers suggestion. I try head out there at least twice a month but I recon ill be spending more money at Uitsig pump park. Good vibes there.

I've just renewed my activity card and green card. I find it extremely disheartening to listen to rogue riders thinking such riding is an achievement. It is plain skelm, dishonest and common. Pay the prescribed fee or ride somewhere else where you can afford it.

I find it funny though that these same people for the very least pay the dstv and car license!!!!!!

That is such an awful defeatist attitude... the typical ... "suck it up and stop moaning or p1iss off" ..... South African attitude.. no wonder your government is ripping you to shreds, because people like you just accept this onslaught to our quality of life

IF enough people complain and find out who to complain to then something might be arranged for cyclists ..

Complain and NOT steal douchebag... nuff said.

I rode Paul Cluver on Saturday for R30, superb scenery, well maintained and marked trails, plenty of flowing ST, bridges, berms etc (that cost time and money to create)

and Tokai is R60 to be legallly compliant

It is not about being cheap, looking for bargains or trying to get off to pay as little as possible. And the fact that you own so many carbon bikes and pay so much for DSTV has nothing to do with it. Yes, alot of the okes can afford it, but no one likes left feeling ripped off

We all work hard for our money and when we spend we take comfort that we know that the money is well spent, be it R5 or R5000.

So if Tokai wanna charge R60, then show us some benefits other than legal compliance.

(btw, I take out the Annual Membership because I ride it often enough to justify it and don't support rogue riding)

hey, the increase was a surprise to us all but it's been said here and other places so many times; the rate was set to some standard fee across all of SANParks national,

the Tokai trail offering is seriously out of date,

there is a group of dedicated people working to change that.

What is needed from the mountain bikers is support of the legislated process that needs to be run in order to get the trails that TMNP also want. To say they don't want it is wrong.. Remember, Tokai was only made part of SANParks from 2005 and nothing was going to change until new management moved into the area in the form of TMNP head office. Sure the short-term looks bleak but there are real reasons for the apparent current state of the trails, too many to get into now.

While TMNP supports our request for change, we should not be burning tyres.. ride elsewhere if it bothers you to that point, you will be welcomed back when things improve.. at least we have options..

They can legally detain you on grounds of trepassing, and lay a charge against you. In addition to that, they can submit your name to the good guys over at the PPA & AMARider, who have a centralised database linked to ALL major and minor MTB events, which will then cause you to be banned from not only Tokai, but any affiliated route / trail park / race in the greater WC region and shortly the country.

So, in short, you can't just "not give them your details" in the hope that it'll go away and as some form of "protest". Yes, this requires action on their part, but then someone else (who is a paying rider) can also perform a citizen's arrest and wait for the landowner / caretaker to take over with the police.

Not looking so good now, is it?

Have a report from a trusted source...that this just happened a rider without a permit collared on the silver-mine section...He has been charged with trespassing...if convicted this gives him a criminal record...his court appearance and lawyer fees upwards of R6000...

R400 bucks for an activity card not looking that expensive now is it?

Trusted source - give us names.

We all know these people - but they are elusive and can never be traced.

I want to know for a fact - give me just one name of someone who has a criminal record for trespassing anywhere!

(The case on Table Mountain last year - was the guy charged and did he appear in court - what was the outcome - fact pls)

A friend of mine got to tokai early one morning( he normally has a yearly and if not buys a daily) and was turned around at silvermine. Basically he was told to leave or get a permit.

I've never seen it happen but I know that poking a lion with a short stick will end in tears.

Get a dog, or two, get an activity card and have zero problems. That card kills two birds with one stone for me, and has paid itself off in the first couple weeks if you had to count up the number of times one visits Tokai.

Is one still required to have an activity card for riding at Rhodes? I walk my dogs all over, so dont feel the pain at all. I basically ride for free anywhere I want.

Not quite fair on the people who dont own dogs, perhaps they should have a lighter option for the bike riders...

You need a separate permit for dog walking.
