60k wow, things can't be that bad in SA if people still have that type of cash to throw around. In a couple of seconds his account will be 6M strong, good on him.

Don't give a sjit about the bragging rights or feelgood vibe doing the epic apparently gives you, because thats why people enter if they were honest. That is stupid money. I wont even race it if someone else pays just out of respect for their money. No race it worth that kind of cash.

Work hard, build a career, don't borrow for depreciating "assets", invest wisely and 60k soon enough becomes affordable.

Eddy I'm going to give you some useless info about where my arguments come from. I've got my own business which is owner operated, so let me put it to you this way, I work 18 hours a day, pay my VAT, I don't borrow money, but at the end of the month I've only got enough left if nothing broke during the month to pay salaries, fuel, munisipal fees etc. If you have any idea how low salaries in the Garden Route is you will laugh, after I've paid the necessary bills then there is buggerol left to invest. I'm in the transport business and believe me, I've been looking at other ways to make a better and healthier living for a long time. My wife got a secretary job now starting 1 April, full day, my one kid is in boarding school, the other 2 is still going to school from home, they will have to go to daycare after school so how the ....... do one invest wisely?

Like I said just some useless info, I'm definitely not going at you, just giving you some useless info.[emoji6] Anyway I don't have the balls to do a race like this, I just threw my spanner in the works, it's only my 2cents.

Yup.. really - not something you ever show the wife. .. although that does include a bike - you will wear one just about out over a years training and racing.

you are right that this certainly is the trend, and I guess if you are spending 60k on an entry you are probably not stressing too much about the costs of the other bits and pieces

But it is definitely possible to do it on a LOT less than is suggested, (you might not fit in being the main problem!). I will qualify this by saying that if you live in Cape Town its a lot cheaper too.

I was looking at the Exxaro lads on the same bikes it seems they got back in 2013, hardtails, XT/ SLX equipped, certainly the stuff within most peoples budget if you are entering.

So yes a new drivetrain, new helmet, new bling shoes, new kit, powermeter, dual suss, etc etc are all great, but nothing replaces the engine and the passion and those okes in green seem to have it.

My point is if you can withstand the trend and be prepared to be disciplined you dont have to hide stuff from your wife....
