Stop waisting your time on the hub. Go and write a blog about the battle of Stormberg and the Osseberg. So that I can stop checking twice a day.

Did you know that you pass right through the middle of the battle of Stormberg ? There is a monument 280m to the left before you turn of to the farm Klipfontein where the very first shot of the battle was fire ?

Although no battle was fight in the Osseberg, only the Freedom Challenge riders skirmishes with the thorns, but Kaalvoet Thysie took hiding at the bottom of the Grootrivierpoort for a couple of months.....

No wonder they couldn't find him.

Well! All's gone quiet I see. Marnitz indicating he is not back for another round of Freedom Challenge adventure....but then we will have to see if there is truth in that. wink wink.

So who else is in for a bout of soulful madness so far for 2016? Signed, paid and sealed ..... training for now is more in the planning stage. Don't want to burn out before it has started.... :whistling:  - Excitement must be savoured...

It all depends on my American harvesting contract......... if it ends before May, I might just enjoy a leisurely holiday on the Freedom, the other option might be the Tour Divide or the Colorado Trail Race while I'm there......

History has shown : Never say Never......

The truth is I would like to race every year, till I die (hopefully with a moerse smile during a race), but without sponsorship and financial backing it's impossible........

So you have made up your mind, paid the entry fee, to soon to start doing those 8 hour + rides, what now ???

Well the first thing you can do is to familiarize yourself with the Race Rules, especially the Golden Rules, because they could get you disqualified or even banned if not adhere to.

One of the most important rules is the one about GPS assistance, even the faintest idea of a GPS is banned, absolutely no GPS device is allowed, not even the one in your watch, only narratives, compass and maps are allowed.

The next thing that you could do is to familiarize yourself with the route and there are various  way that you can do it :

  • Get the narratives and the maps on the same page.
  • Enter the Ride to Rhodes or Race to Cradock.
  • Contact Meryl and organize your own Recce, just remember to leave only track, no marking of the route in what ever way are allowed, no ribbons, danger tape, spray paint, nor marking at all except tire tracks.
  • Or pay someone to show you the route before the race.

Once you know the rules and the route, your next aim would be to get the correct kit :

  • Racing snakes prefer small backpacks 22-25 liter, they like to push their luck, carrying the bare minimum until their luck run out.
  • Puff Adders prefer bigger bags 25-32 liter, they prefer to have a picnic every once in a while.
  • Once you have decided on a back pack, you will know how much you can fit in your bag.......
  • Read the blogs, forums and have a close look at pictures to determine what kit to buy to fit in your bag, average morning temperature will be between -8 to -10.

Remember money can't buy you a Freedom Challenge blanket, the Freedom Challenge ain't a marked, boutique race with massage stops and tech repair areas, you yourself have to pedal all the way......
