33 Days to the BIG DOWN run.

Did my "long run" yesterday, past of Fish Hoek AC and they traditionally put on a 52km route called 4Hills4Lindsay.

We have about 35 entrants, but quite a few came from other clubs and it was about 100 people who trundled off into the darkness. The weather was peach perfect and what a great route with 12 aid stations along the way.WhatsAppImage2025-05-04at07_17_53.jpeg.fccba1ca4912b1a75cf6d4d09b4095df.jpeg

It was going to be a big reality check, as I haven't done enough mileage this year and I'm unsure how to factor cycling time in. I tried really holding back to simulate Comrades race pace, but this is always difficult. had had enough by the 40km mark, so walked all the uphills from there, and some of the gentle inclines too!

the knees are sore, going to need to be very calculated over the next month to maximise gains on the final push to the startline

I thought you were going to say "had had enough by the 40km mark, so you put the hammer down". Well Done.

I opted for the False Bay 50km What a stunning route. Cycled it many times before but running it gives you are different experience & you get to take in all the scenery for much longer.

At the 40km mark you have the option of your car 1,5km away or an extra 12km loop. It's really really tempting to can it right there!

FB50 also seemed like a good option, but much earlier start with all the logistics! Can imagine running a closed clarence drive is an experience like no other. It's a special place for me as riding to rooi els and back as a matie was the best big training ride, and I did quite a few Totalsports challenge events as a solo.

Speaking of temptation I had 60km training run on the program. 2 other runners agreed along the way that when we get to the finish we will turn around for another 5kms back on the route then back to the finish. We got separated at some point on the route when I stopped for a toilet break. They then ended up picking up the pace and after 50kms needless to say they went out too hard & quickly banished that good idea of an extra 10kms, I soldiered on because my OCD would not let me call it a day.

Logistics was made easier by literally getting picked up by my front door by a 30 seater bus made up of runners from various clubs we collected along the way.

it takes leather balls to keep going past any finishline for more!

Totalsports Table Mountain 16 km

Has anyone run this before? From the brief description, it sounds like it just goes up the concrete/gravel to the dam.

Wondering if my road shoes would be fine for this.

I think you can find better ways to spend R470!

I'm all open to suggestions

any of the many races that doesn't involve a shuttle schlepp to then go straight up a concrete path!  hey but everyone has their poison I guess.

I am enjoying the series of TrailFun events.  Typically a 5 and a 10km route.  For the price of the10km, about R200, you can enter the 10, 15 or 20km runs.

If you take out an annual membership it is about R100 per event

Each event is on a different farm.  Sure, some farms appear on the schedule twice a year.  Still very nice way to explore our backyard.

EDIT -

TrailFun has an interesting concept with the start of the event.  When you enter you get a "card" with a barcode.  You can start the FUN run from 7:00, just scan the card at the start and your time is recorded.  Scan when you complete.

With a few hundred participants there is never a mass trampling each other.  No mad rush for parking.  It is just so much nicer.

If you want to RACE for podium, then there are smaller groups for the 5 and the 10km with fixed start times.

PS - At Mooiplaas on Saturday morning

In Slaapstad for some business, so packed my shoes and some kit for a couple runs; doesn’t beat riding, but beats a week with nothing. Was good to see I wasn’t far off from my normal fun run pace, despite this being my 3rd or 4th run for the year.

Do the folk in this part of the world not greet each other? Asking for a friend ????????

On the other side of the Overberg mountains, they’re as friendly as anything.

Tell your friend that they dont really greet, and if they do they are usually from Joburg (which according to CapeTonians is all of South Africa north of Bloemfontein). If you greet poeple too enthusiastically they will be terrified so you have to do that wierd, half-engaged sideways nod when you pass them on the cycle path. :-)
