1870 km in ~21 weeks is an average of 90km per week. bliksem. you must be running pretty fast.

Biggest week was 139kms. Had a few >100km weeks. On par for a borderline silver, probably want 160kms weeks for a comfortable Sub 7:30

@milky4130which is harder Two Oceans or Comrades silver lining?

Laat question, how did teh running effect your cycling?
Looking to find out if serious run training can replace cycling and if you will still be able to pitch and do a decent effort on the bike.

Once again congrats on the effort.

Anecdotally, I've found that it is very beneficial. I've taken the last eighteen months off cycling to focus on running and prepare for ultras. Two or so months ago, I picked up a hip injury and can't run, but I can cycle. My FTP is pretty much where it was when I stopped cycling, and at that point I was the fittest I've ever been.

My goal was 2000km come race day. I surprisingly only fell short by 130kms due to being sick twice, Jan & again in May. Also regularly dropped the Monday recovery run when I felt too sore or tired. In hindsight more hills up & down was needed. Goal was still achieved albeit in a shattered state.

2000 km in 5 months!!!!

I have never run that in a whole year, but then again I have never run comrades.

Thank You 🙌

Comrades Down Run by a Country Mile. Take 2 Oceans and multiply it by 100.

No cycling this year except for the odd commute to work usually only 2 or 3 times a week of 18kms one way / 45mins but no specific cycling workouts. Did the CTCT as a social ride with some international mates also didn't want to risk a crash up front in @ with 2 Oceans being just a few weeks out.

Running cannot replace cycling ever but Cycling can replace/supplement running, which I did last year when training for IM. This year I really felt missing the extra oomf I had last year & the only thing I could attribute it to was the lack of cycling. Going forward I'll incorporate cycling more, 2-3 times a week at least. Last year I was still able to bang out decent intervals on the bike while running so it is possible since its slightly different muscles being activated for the efforts.

I'm guessing the Elites run in the region of +-2800kms over the same period.

Having been a long distance runner for many seasons before discussing electronic shifting and carefully procuring the best white socks, one of the unintended side-effects that will benefit one's performance in any other sport is immeasurable grit, resilience and courage.

Very interesting statement.

A friend that has done a couple of Ironman events, Comrades etc. says it slightly differently.

She says: "Cycling does not help for running, but running helps for cycling".  Something about the way running activates more of the leg muscles.

Of course this is very relative, because at this level most people do cross training to ensure all muscle groups are up for the game.

Possibly, my understanding is Cardiovascularly cycling supplements running i.e. you can get the same benefit without the load and impact on muscles, joints and tendons. This is especially crucial if you are nursing a running injury. I’ve also heard that climbing uphills on the bike will activate some of the running muscles but without the load running will incur.

@Eugene Oppeltyou have seen through my post! Last year I asked about your clothing for the winter...I tried but failed. Was planning to comment on your Tuesday post of  "where has your bike taken you". In awe of your mental resolute.

I love cycling, running is hard work to me, not enjoying as much but perhaps the gateway to enjoy my cycling when the summer arrives.

Not sure if it is the Park Runs or the gym sessions .... but my cycling has improved significantly over the last year !

There's your motivation thought for the day  (please ignore the stupidly low base I started from) :whistling:
