I'm entered for the Marathon... there is a chance I might do Kaapsehoop instead though.

I think I'm going to give Kaapsehoop a try. Heard a lot about it and have been told it's a good gentle introduction to the down run. Training for the Zwartkop Lapa 10km for now as my short term goal. Haven't done a sufferfest of a 10km since my very first race (Nike run).

Kaapse Hoop is one of the "easier" qualifiers for Comrades. It is mostly downhill, except for the last couple of kilometers. Try and train in the heat as soon as summer starts. The race is very humid.

What a journey. It was my first ever marathon, ran it in November last year. I smacked the wall at about 34km and vividly remember thinking "£$%^ this distance. Half marathon is more suited to me. And I'm NEVER running Comrades!"

Haaaahahaha! Sorry for laughing!

Just over 30k's is EXACTLY where walls will be smacked at marathon distance. I was forewarned for my first one and it still came as a shock. And no, I'm not the expert here... Done 3 marathons (and one Oceans full) to date.

Don't give up on it, it just a different mindset and pacing and something you have to prepare for. That said, I'm not doing anything over 56k's on the road. And if you haven't guessed yet, I do most of my running off the road.

Regarding CTM build-up. I have little lined up. Bleak to have missed Theuniskraal trail run this weekend due to this dragging illness.

Next weekend there's one at Ridgeback which will be some speedwork. Back from leave for the half of Festival of Running. Then 9 Aug is Banhoek Duo, where I'll do the long trail only (instead of mini trail and mini MTB) Then a nice gap still to fill before Cape Town.

Recovery drink? I mostly run with water. If I know it's going to be a long day on the trails I'll take something to munch and maybe some Tailwind. When I get home, if I really feel I need something, I'll have a choc Nesquick (can't believe that to be too much different than a Steri-Stumpy or whatever). Maybe some rehidrat later. If we do a group run, the recovery drinks are ehhhrrr... SAB (mostly!) branded. Sometimes we get our hands on other brews...

Back when I was young and dumb and ran (still dumb ????) I was told by old timer runners that the hakfway mark at a marathon was 32k's ... Found it to be true every time!

Don't worry about it, Barry got over the hurty thirties and klapped Comrades in 9 hours...

The 30km mark really is fun and games those first few marathons though

you okes have it all wrong - a marathon is a 32 km training run and then 10km race  :whistling:

Bugger that....I'm still traumatised by my last marathon attempt and think I will do the 21k instead this year October

Joh the last 10 k or so was a miserable time and then there are all the spectators shouting "hop hop" the Swiss version of "come on you look good...."

But yes next year I will kill it.... ????????

I hit the wall normally at 28kms. I am then cursing in my head up to 32 kms... When I hit single digits then I get my second wind (well sometimes....)
