Just thinking about it, I'm doing Run the Berg later this year... two stages, 25km's a day.

Had planned to just use my older Asics (they've still got some miles left in them), but should I be looking at trail specific shoes though?

Really don't need/want to add to my shoe budget unnecessarily...

I would go with trail shoes for few reasons

Dust and water, road shoes don't handle getting wet as well, and long grass dew in the AM can wreak hovoc on feet if they don't dry out well.

Grip is important otherwise you gonna end up running downhills super slow to avoid injury.

Keep an eye out there are good deals at the moment.

I can't see how people can do trail running with normal road shoes and you see it a plenty.   I tried it once and it was only on a good gravel road, you feel every little stone.   Trail shoes nothing, and you have serious grip as well as harder fronts to protect your toes from bumps against rocks.

With all my wife's struggle with road shoes, that does not destroy her feet and toes, we cannot believe how perfect her 910 NB works for her.  So comfortable and no issues.  They are not that expensive as well.

I hear Saucony Peregrines are awesome, but they are R2,200

Nope, been totally off. will try and get on the IDT and spin the legs from this weekend to get get something done but this week walking up the stair has been an issue.

60 days you say, thanks bud. puts my mind at ease. gives me 40 days to get it sorted out. only need to do sub 5 for soweto and then can go for a faster time at Johnson in Jan if need be.

I'll be the professor of doom.....

LECTURE TIME

This is why people get ITB, they should change the name to TMTS Syndrome

Now is the time to focus on getting fit and strong in other sports that don't agrevate your ITB

A marathon in less than a 100 days in your situation is ........ a silly gamble that you should not risk taking

If I'm wrong you just missed a marafun ( there will be plenty more) if I'm right you just put yourself back another 6 months or more....

Take care

Running injuries are just so frustrating, I kept running or ran after an insufficient rest period and ended up not running for 6 months. The only way to beat itb is with condition exercises, you can rest for a year and it will be back within 4km on your first run.

Suffering with shin splints. Took 3 weeks of running with my first run yesterday. Slow 2.5, shins felt good but stiff as hell today.

Now just to build up slowly again.

Hi all

Not sure if it has been covered here before.  I'm looking to go see a biokineticist in die Bellville/Durbaville area.  Ran quite a lot before the 2 Oceans Half, pushed a little to hard, then felt the knee a day or 2 before the race, managed to get through without to much hassle.  The did some cycling, with intermittent running in between, but realized the knee is a problem.  Been sick for the las 2 months, without any training, so enough rest.  Still feel the knee now and again.  Point is, feel like I should go and see a biokineticist to help me out, don't think I need to go see a doctor.

Any names, or advise for this?

Look at your shoes.  You possibly have used neutral shoes instead of motion control shoes.  Look for compression lines on the soles around the heal.  Place your shoes on level ground and check if your heal cup/counter is leaning inwards towards the other shoe.  If this is happening then it is pulling your knee inwards (knock knee) when ever you run, causing pressure on the ITB which is working to stabilise your leg.  Also Consider a physiotherapist (muscle misalignment) or/and a chiropractor, (misaligned spine).

Cool, thanks for the advise.

So you recon physiotherapist rather than biokinetisist?

I use Saucony ISO Triumph shoes, but I am due for a new pair, will have a look at the shoes as per you suggestion.

or snip snip and then correct muscle imbalances, you can be running again in 3 weeks.

Did a 21km trail run this past weekend with a good friend of mine. But somewhere somehow I injured my calf muscle on the run. Its not very painful, just sore enough so that you start stressing about it. So I bought some transact and Voltaren pills, and feels alot better today. Next weekend is the Skukuza race, and I wanna be injury free.

RICE:

Rest.  (No slogging runs)

Ice. (Eish)

Compress. (You get socks for this, but a good rub also works)

Elevate.  (Put your feet up on the desk)
