How are you all balancing your training in terms of hours breakdown, obviously you are mostly all cycling as well a bit?

finding that balance between running, cycling, strength work, paddling, and climbing is a constant fight for me

I'm a runner first.. I've kind of shifted from cycling to running since I started running. I cycle in the off season... But I don't relish cycling in winter here.. Plus my bike is still sitting in storage in SA[emoji848]

I do an hour in the morning every day and then a long one on Saturday morning. By Sunday I'm knackered... Then it all starts again. Off season I'll shift it down to 3 runs in the week and a 20km max long run on the weekend

There's nothing linear about qualifying times versus Comrades runs, or amounts of training versus times. We also all live very different lives and have different goals, motivations, available training time etc etc There is nothing wrong with just aiming to finish Comrades. As a friend of mines physio pointed out to him, even if you feel like you're not hitting your straps with your training and reaching your potential, the simple fact you are a Comrades runner puts you among the top 0.5% fittest people in the world.

The current systems works pretty darn well I reckon, I've got a friend who scrapes qualifying but finishes under 11, I've got mates who go under 4hours in qualifying but scrape a finish at Comrades.

Much of the beauty of the race lies at the back, the people defying odds, going deep, discovering things about themselves they never knew, and pushing themselves to do something they never dreamed possible. I agree that the race can't really expand it's capacity much, but I also don't get this idea that lesser mortals should pushed aside...

For me, it's the Ultimate human race, because everybody can achieve it, just very few have the courage to do so.

Agreed 100%

If it’s not broken don’t fiddle with it

I train roughly 1hr in the morning and 1hr in the evening during the week, with long rides and runs at weekend.  Monday and Tuesday are recovery, Wed through to Friday are workouts/build, Sat and Sun LSD or racing.  A typical week being:

Mon - Swim

Tues - Run and spin

Wed - Run and swim

Thurs - Spin and swim

Fri - Strength and run

Sat - ride

Sun - run

My rest period is Sunday after my run through to Monday evening's swim with Monday and Tuesday recovery intensity workouts.  It works for me.

What's the view on race time predictors?

I checked 2 calculators and 1 gave a time of 3:34, the other gave a 3:36. Am I being too optimistic in trying to go sub 3:30? In all honesty, I'll be happy with any of the 3 because it will result in the same seeding.

I struggled with fatigue, and heavy legs, at the cycle races in Q1 of this year - yet still managed a top-10 and top-20 position in 2 of the 3 cycle races I had entered. The upcoming Spring races will show how far I’ve regressed by just riding.

As I’m doing the Strava 365 challenge, my goal has shifted from structured sessions to just riding. Running was structured when building up to my first 10km, but since April I’ve also just enjoyed doing something every day.

So, my week is a mix of indoor running/riding, a coffee ride on Friday and then one long ride, and a 10km run on Sunday. Like Shaper, my recovery is from Sunday morning to the usual IDT ride on Monday evening.

I've been telling you okes... rest is everything. I do though take it a little too far, most of the time.

I'm on the same program.   Doing much better with way less km's and runs but better quality.   Being rested makes the world of difference in my case.

Achilles tendinopathy - who has experience with this?

Think I picked this up inflating my cycling and running mileages at the same time, far more than the 10% rule of thumb.

I did, and the reason I missed comrades this year. Same reason, I ramped up my training in December without a proper base, and end of Feb I had a proper case of AT. Two months of almost no running and doing calf raises religiously is all that helped.

What's your 5km and 10km time... Those should be the best guage for a race time prediction
