JuddMan Posted January 29, 2019 Posted January 29, 2019 Well done! As a fellow newbie, I can imagine the feeling of finishing a 21. I.t.o. Stiffness, I find a slow ride (on the road or IDT) works extremely well to flush any lactic acid out the system. Foam rollers help but not as effective as spinning the legs. Minimal resistance/no hills, @ 80-90rpm.Thanks Frosty. Much appreciated [emoji1303]
SwissVan Posted January 29, 2019 Posted January 29, 2019 Thanks Frosty. Much appreciated [emoji1303]Well done and enjoy the new club, northerns are one of the great clubs around. As for the pains, nothing helps in the short term except doing more similar type events.Wear it like a medal ???? the pain that is???? JuddMan 1
Fruity Posted January 29, 2019 Posted January 29, 2019 So this past weekend I completed my first ever Half Marathon at Johnson Crane! Came in with a time of 2:32. I was aiming for 2:30 so not at all disappointed, and being my first Half Marathon, I just wanted to finish! I will train better and start improving. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, as it was my first ever 'big race' vs other 10km and 15km races I've done. Will there be more? Abso-frikken-lutely! Already planning Robor Schaffolding or Wally Hayward as my next 21km. One thing I was not expecting is the stiffness of the muscles the day after but epsom salts baths are helping a lot. Would adding in some foam rolling help or make matters worse? I did this run without being apart of a club. But will be joining Benoni Northens AC this Wednesday Congrats. I'm planning on doing a half marathon later on this year, first need to train for that distance. Joining an athletic club is exciting, my wife and I just recently joined a local athletic club - they're quite a big club in our area, and seem to have some lekker club members. JuddMan 1
Fruity Posted January 29, 2019 Posted January 29, 2019 Found this on Runner's World Magazine South Africa:https://www.runnersworld.co.za/training-plans/ Could be quite handy for us newbie runners. JuddMan 1

My first Comrades I was feeling very sorry for myself at about half way, was chafing seriously, had totally cocked up my nutrition and had on the wrong socks which cause my feet to chafe inside my takkies as well. I walked up to the Benoni Northerns gazebo to beg for some vaseline but instead the lady there insisted I have some proper lube, something to eat and something to drink. I was treated like royalty and not even a club member. Left there feeling much better. Lexx, Hacc, Bikes and 1 other 4
Lexx Posted January 29, 2019 Posted January 29, 2019 Just a couple of questions to the guys that are using Tailwind. How do you drink your Tailwind in a race if you don't carry any bottles? Can you just pour one of those stick packs in your mouth and wash it down with a water sachet? Because I hate carrying bottles in a race.

Thinking of getting something like this:https://www.sportsmanswarehouse.co.za/product/salomon-trail-20-hydration-pack

Because I hate carrying bottles in a race.I don't run all that many road races... so I'm on the same boat as Dave there. Also, that entire sachet in one go will be a very bad idea, that a load of powder which won't work if your already hot and dry-mouthed. Not to mention that then you'll get all the energy supplied in one shot as opposed to sipping every now and then.
dave303e Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 (edited) sorry wrong post reply* Edited January 30, 2019 by dave303e
dave303e Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 Honestly they should ban those stupid water sachets, go walk any route from a race on the weekend and you will spot them somewhere along the road. If there are reusable cups at the tables you can pour tailwind into the cup, give it a swirl and then down it. Also a small ziploc is best for tailwind, buy a big bag of tailwind and then decant powder into ziploc so you can control volume to match a cup size and reuse the ziploc over and over. But soft flasks are the way to go, like at karkloof, I have 6 of them so 2nds can have them cold and premixed and meet at water stations and you just swap them out on the run and then drink as and when needed losing no time at all. Carrying 500ml or a liter is minimal to carry, plus you have space for food. Pulse 1
Mudsimus Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 I use a Salomon soft flask. It folds easy, so I put it in a pocket/running belt, and when I need it I mix a water sachet with what ever use. No issues doing while running. The racing vest is nice for training, but in a road race it's just not comfortable. Lexx 1
Lexx Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 If I'm in a road race, I don't really want to stop and mix the powder in a cup at every couple of aid stations. Trail running is totally different. Stretch 1
