Unpopular opinion: I actually like Walmsley. He is what he is and he doesn't stage manage his personality. He overshoots often and gets criticised but, again, I respect him for that. As someone who often takes the cautious route, it's great watching another guy who is happy to toe right up to the line of what his body is capable of, even if it means overstepping it sometimes and bombing out of the win in a ball of flames. I doubt I'd be best mates with him but I do appreciate that there are people like him around.

I started at 45 or 46. Agree - it would have been nice to have started earlier. .

.

I competively did Junior school Athletics and long distance (15km). Got to high school and neglected Athletics. Got to varsity and neglected sport. I'm annoyed because I'm sure I could have run a sub 3 in my 20s or 30s... Those days are over I fear.... But then.. If a 70+year old can run a sub 3 then anyone can

You're quite correct of course. We do often forget 'they' are all just people at the end of the day... and often these people's persona's are what make them exceptional athletes at the same time.

In hindsight he himself might even have said it better, but like you say, he's a guy that charges in and does things... not a lot of second guessing and caution.

I only started distance running 3 years ago and I am now 50 years young.

I only wish I had started earlier.

In my youth I was a junior springbok sprinter 100m and 200m as well as world beach sprint champion, but never ventured past 400m in distance

Upon finishing school and studying most forms of sport took a back seat, albeit a bit of cycling.

My mind says I can but my body hates me after a long run.

I am with you on that, it gives me hope, I end up curled up in fetal position chundering my lungs more than him, but it helps relate a bit I guess.

Not like others who seemingly never put a foot wrong, double everesting(the real one, not repeats on the local inclined gradient) in a week, winning 100 milers even when dislocating shoulder early in the event etc. It's just too super human.

All these youngsters.....I started my running journey under the V flag!

I started running when I was 33 years old. Wished I started earlier.

49 when I started

I started 3 months before hitting 45. I have no regrets about starting so late, just trying to make the most of it, while I’m still healthy.

I’ll be happy if I can run and ride as well as a 70yr member in my club.

Our very own Ferret beat him. Maybe your calling is in the mountains Ferret.

Haha Maybe that's it

Hitting Lesotho Ultra 50km again this year.. finished 10th there in 2017.. Maybe that will be the turning point

Just a small issue of 87kms on 9 June to deal with first..

And BTW Sandes didn't stop for Photos and have a Social day out... I passed him on Ou Kaapse and he was pretty close behind me the rest of the way.. And looked pretty done at the end like the rest of us...

He is a goat in the mountains and a Legend on the trails but not going to win Comrades anytime soon...

Trail guys...if anyone is looking for the best weekend ever, Zingela Trail Run is a must on the list.  Technical run with no frills and graces, no goody bags, no prize giving but just the best trails in the middle of nowhere.  32km and 21km or 21km or 18km,. The field is about 80 runners and very few youngsters, average age is 40ish...youngsters whine too much cos its not easiest.
