Not about running but here is a reason to avoid it. You don't have to read the article, it's all in the link already.

yep. People walking around staring at phones in cities makes me think of a zombie apocalypse.

Although in my case (see post above) I don’t run on train tracks or public roads really. So not sure how the train story applies to my request for headphone advice?

I'm also against wearing head/earphones while running/riding in public.

I used to trail run with a play list but since I had my 4 legged trail friend I haven't missed it at all.

It is also 'illegal' in pretty much all races, road and trail, so I find I don't want to train with it and then feel like something is missing on race day.

I now get annoyed at the other trail users who obliviously get in the way and then get a huge fright when you or the dog come past/near them.

why would you think that?

On roads you can't hear cars/bikes/trucks, so it is dangerous.

On paths that are shared  you can't hear others- bicycle passes fast and gives you a fright and you jump the wrong way.

If someones dog comes at you you have no warning and won't hear it coming.  This is not limited to dogs( remember the buck taking out the cyclist, Walmsley and the bears at WS etc). Also if someone is a distance away and tries to warn you about something you won't hear.

Weather- often if you are running in one direction you don't see the storm building up behind you or hear the thunder then you get to your turn point and there is groot k@k built up behind you.

Music in earphones narrows your focus and you tend to just put head down and run and your are oblivious to all around you.

There is a reason the IAAF, ASA, UCI and others have rules against them.

It doesn't apply, it's just an example which proves that ear/headphones should not be used in TRAINing or racing.

RAC Tough One weekend is upon us!!  (where did this year go?)

Looking forward to finishing the season on Sunday.

(well, not that runners ever rest)

I remember my first Tough One in 2014 was a wet one, hoping for some cool weather on Sunday.

Valid point, yet races I’ve seen here people still use them and have yet to see it being enforced on joe average

While I don’t believe the reason for being illegal is this, I wonder how much they might boost performance?

Think this was discussed here a year or so ago ????

I'm pretty scared. I wish I knew what my stupid brain has in store for my poor body on Sunday

I ran the first 26km on the route two weeks ago with a few mates. I forgot how brutal it gets from 17k onwards

Ditto, see it so much here. Runners with earphones are oblivious to faster traffic approaching from out of sight I.e. the side and behind. I’ve learnt to give them a wider than normal space when passing them.

Generally runners with earphones are placing their own safety in the hands of the other road users, that leaves me feeling a bit uneasy which is why I don’t wear them when riding or running outdoors.

Maybe it’s different here in Europe where runners, cyclists and pedestrians all share the same paths which tend to be narrower and have lots of pedestrian and cycle traffic moving in both directions

Yup..I wouldn't dream of it here in Ireland. We pretty much run on the small country roads and you can drive anything from 80 to 100 on those. There was a chap killed not to long ago because he was running with earphones and didn't hear a car coming up behind him.

How do the race entry fees in Ireland/ UK / Europe compare?

I don’t do many in switz, but the last marathon I did a few years ago and a few 21’s and triathlons seem expensive and don’t offer anything better than SA (albeit I have not done any in SA since +/- 2012)

Races are expensive.. No doubt .. I paid €80 for Dublin, €75 for Amsterdam and $250 for Dublin! 4 and 5 mile races are around €15 and and happy marathons around €20

Like most things in life one has to use common sense. I wouldn't dare run or cycle with earphones during the day but at 3 or 4am in a quiet neighbourhood I will run with one earphone in the ear closest to the pavement (if battling to get out of bed or the house) leaving the other open to hear everything. everyone's environment and circumstances is different especially when going international so don't think its realistic to say one rule fits all.

Go for that very special sub 3!

The second half is very tough, especially the last 5 km.

+1

I run with earphones at low volume and I can still hear cars behind me. I find the music helps my rhythm and I also get my timing called out on Strava so I'm not relying on my own perceived effort (which usually will try BS me completely).
