Probably helps that you're a hot South African chick. Kiwi men appreciate SA ladies big time ;)

   Na I don't think that's the reason.

What I really like about NZ is that the guys (well most of them I have met) are so 'useful'. They cook, clean, shop etc etc and are pretty good at it too. Like a general thing some of my colleagues will say is "I cleaned yesterday and did the laundry" (which in their terms also means ironing)......All this is pretty unusual to SA okes. Most days I chat to my closest colleague about what he is making for lunch or activities he did with his kids etc. And then also being invited to dinner at some other okes house (where he stays alone) and hence has to look after the house and he cooked plus it is on a farm which he looks after himself and all this is on top of having a normal job.... I think spoilt little brats from SA needs to be send here to come see what chores are.

These guys gets

Judging from what I can find online we were quite fortunate in JHB with the number and frequency of races being held and their proximity to the city centre.

LOL. And here I am, thinking that's normal.

I suppose it comes down to how we're raised. We were raised with a heavy element of "If you want it, do it yourself" and cleaning all the time.

Also a REALLY big reason I recommend to most people I meet to travel for a couple years or go it alone asap, if they have the opportunity to do so.

My brother  who has spent quite a bit of time in NZ and will be 'retiring' there very soon (leaves 10th of Oct sadly) told me that he sees that as the end of his racing bicycles ..... due to the lack of events that is!

I really couldn't have said it better

Hayley, perhaps you have simply been socialising with the 'wrong' crowd, if this is a surprise to you. Having said that, a lot of my friends are high flying chartered accountants, lawyers or work for banks and they have always had a domestic to clean up around them.

Just this morning, I was hanging washing on the line, helped change the bed linen and I've got the vacuum out already in prep for this afternoon. I've got a deal with myself that on a Wednesday, I can only ride once I've vacuumed and washed the floors.

What do you guys want from r the races you are looking for? The chance to be on a podium and get a finishers medal or a big organized ride (where trust me these okes I've seen don't do those as "coffee rides"), cause there's plenty of the later. I've joined groups on Strava and fb and get invited to a few (haven't been to any of the road ones cause my bike is on a ship somewhere)

Off topic, but I'm a semi-bachelor at the moment (wife and kid went to durban on Friday and come back on Monday) and the drop in the amount of washing and dishes is HUUUUGE!

Saying that, I need to vacuum & sweep the house this evening. And start washing my bike before I bring it inside!!! Just creates more work for myself.

Personally, the latter. I value the kuier aspect far more than the medals / podium. Plus, strava is all you need for that.

I think the difference is that in SA domestic workers are affordable. I do all my own house work, washing, Ironing And the garden chors etc... its not because I can't afford a domestic but because having one doesn't work with my travels for work. It's the same for most in the Europe. I have friends my age that still take heir laundry to mommy. I find that quite pathetic.

Edit. Call it the "Ousi will do it mentality".

I was more talking to the okes saying their racing will end here in NZ. Also the group rides I mentioned isn't those kuier types, it's basically 'fastest around'.

I have a similar experience here in Germany.  Not too many local races but to be honest I did not really followup on that.  It was a hectic first year and also started a job earlier this year so simply had other priorities.  I was also not too concerned as there are soooo many roads to ride that I hardly do the same exact route twice.  There are still many routes to explore. There are facebook groups that organise rides in our area but their times do not normally suite me.  Meeting up with a fellow saffa and team mate made it easier.  We go on long rides every now and then.  I decided that next summer however I would like to do some races.  Had a look at a few websites and the races are there but they might need a bit of travelling.  Nice excuse to organise weekends away.

When I lived in SA we did all the rides as it was a means to ride fast in big bunches in a relatively safe enviroment with marshalls etc.Cheap for the price of an entry.Same as MTB races. The more the merrier

Yip....again things are cheaper here. Unskilled labour being one of them and yes, I pay to get my car washed / lawn mowed / house cleaned / clothes washed and ironed. If you can afford a domestic, why not.

Whenever I see these comments I think 'whatever and just shake my head' .... not everyone wants to be a hipster in skinny jeans on a #enduro bike in the forest with a beard and tattoos  :whistling:

I enjoy races and am not sure why I must be embarrassed about that?

And trust me I know your comments were intended to just say that you can get the same effort/feeling in a fast training ride but there just is something about an organised race ... at least to me and the few other pariahs that like it
