My experiences so far

So my outing into the world of cycling has not gone as smoothly as it perhaps could have. I thought I would post a short description for everyone to laugh over.

Christmas, the wife tells me I need to get fit. I decide that cycling is the way to go for me. Start looking for a bike.

Discover Bike Hub and start reading up. See a few bikes I like on the classifieds section, but eventually decide to go to a store rather.

4 Jan, Buy a used bike from Urban Cycles (Trevor you are a legend. thanks for all the advice / help and for not laughing at me too much) Get the bike home, take it out of the vehicle and push it inside. Discover I have gone over a thorn in the 10 meter push and gotten my first puncture before even riding the bike.

5 Jan, Buy my helmet and cycle shorts. Am now way over the budget allocated for this endeavor.

6 Jan, spend the day fiddling with bike, repairing puncture, etc.

This morning, Go for my first ride. Manage to do 8 km before finally realizing that hell has moved into my lungs with a branch office in my legs. Discover that cycling is for people born without nerve endings in their rear ends. Strava telling me I did 0,6 km in 30 mins with an average speed of 76km/h and a top speed of 16 km/h

Conclusions I have drawn - Cyclists are complete suckers for punishment and yet I cannot wait to go on another ride.

Get used to being over budget. You haven't chosen the cheapest way to get fit, but it's the most fun way.

Enjoy, keep at it, the pain never goes away, you just get faster.

Welcome.

I had a good laugh at this story, that comment about hell in your lungs and a branch office in your legs was priceless.

As Quinton said above, you're always going to be over budget.

You have now learnt that you too are just as much a sucker for punishment...just remember, "Those who do, can't explain; those who don't can't understand"

There was a reason for my Hub name back in the day. And as I am still nursing a broken hip it still rings true and remains a thorny issue. But the fun in between was worth it!

Once you unlearn the word "budget",and perfect the art of telling your wife things were way cheaper than they really were, with a straight face, you will begin to enjoy it!

Oh, and that burn you feel in your lungs and legs! It NEVER goes away, you just go faster.

Welcome and enjoy the ride......appreciate the discomfort......and just chill one day at a time. You are in for an amazing experience.

Nice post

The poopshoot pain becomes part of the fun. If you don't have pain when finishing a ride, you didn't try hard enough

Welcome , and enjoy...you are going to have many more adventures...as an old legend once said...."it never gets easier, you just go faster"..

                                                                     Greg LeMond.

You will begin to enjoy that fiery feeling in your lungs and legs. ohh and chasing strava KOM. Just a word of warning... That black commuter guy on a rickety BMX is actually a lot faster than you, don't try and race him for your EGO's sake.

Greg LeMond.

Or as another legend put it: "It's about you, your bike and a place to ride!"

OP, this crazy sport called cycling is pretty worthwhile and will take you places worth seeing and experiencing! Enjoy riding your bike bru!

Jeez don't remind me about those commuters...the other morning I was commuting on my road bike going at a fairly decent pace, and here comes this guy on his mountain bike with a frame many sizes too small, no helmet or anything, and he was on the dirt next to the road, going much faster than me - I nearly sold my bikes that day, haha
