My wife and I were chatting about this last night. She said that one of the happiest days of her life was when I sold my road bike....

Condolences to family and friends of the two cyclists. I read this thread with a heavy heart. So unnecessary.

This is pretty sad.

You sit wondering what to say, other than condolences.

And struggling to make sense of it.

Thing is it could be any of us.

All about another senseless loss of life caused by things that are avoidable. There are so many what ifs and buts on this tragic incident that seem to be staring at us every day. Simply put we could all think a little more about how to avoid danger if we wanted to and also act differently in our lives. From all parties involved.

There is a loss of life as well as lives destroyed - all the people involved lose. There is no positive from this simple and very tragic incident.

This won't bring anyone back. But it may stop someone else getting killed. And if it does these guys wont have died in vain.

So sorry. There have been too many.......

Condolences to all those who have lost there friends and family, I cant even imagine the lose and pain they are going trough. Drunk driving has become a very big problem in south Africa.

Coming home from the in laws last night I stopped at a for way stop, to my left I noticed a oncoming car making no effort to stop. Not to my surprise he just casually went over the stop, he would have smashed straight into my bakkie if I did not see him.  :cursing:  in his hand he had a big blacklabel.... The big problem is the mentality we have, even if it is wrong to ride on a highway things like this should not be happening.

Absolutely tragic, for everyone.

The South African police and traffic police need to stop thinking that drinking and driving only happens from Dec 15 - Jan 15 every year or over Easter. They need to be a lot more active like the UK police and do roadblocks and breathalyse on a Sunday morning (up till 10am) and not only on a Saturday night.

Get the unlicensed cars off the road and crush them (and make insurance compulsory) . Don't have a valid drivers? Well that's a weekend in chookie for you mate.....Aside from the obvious human loss of life, how much is all of this costing the country from insurance claims to medical bills and loss of earnings.

But its never going to happen as this is Third World Africa....

"But its never going to happen as this is Third World Africa...."

I do not want to detract from anything you are saying here, but I feel I must correct this misconception about South Africa being like the rest of Africa, which is common among South Africans.

I have just returned yesterday from two weeks in the DRC. Believe me when I say that SA in no way, not even remotely, can be categorized as being third world. If this is the case, then everything North and East of Namibia and Botswana can be categorized as being 4th world.

SA is a far cry from being third world, and it is time that we the people of this beautiful nation stand together and make our voices heard. Beginning with a united and public condemnation of drunk driving. I call on the Durban cycling community to stand together during the upcoming trial of the apprehended driver, and to perhaps employ the services of CSA and the PPA in ensuring that justice prevails, not as a measure to exact "revenge" on the driver, but to ensure that a loud message is sent to SA by the cycling public that we have now had enough.

If a fund needs to be created to pay for this, where can I deposit the first donation?

Couldn't agree more. So many people that paint us with the third world brush haven't actually been to other African countries. Pick any of our sub-saharan neighbours,  or a quick trip to Maseru for that matter...

We trying very hard and doing a good job at implementing and maintaining many 'first world standards and procedures'.

Agree fully. i have spent months in Kenya and Tanzania for business and you come with a new understand and realise that South Africa is so much more advanced with almost everything compared to those 2 countries. As Trevor Noah says this South Africa is Africa Lite...

There are a lot of stories doing the rounds...I was riding in the group when Richard and Jared were hit from the back...just behind me...the best at what they do have been assigned to this incident...the entire area is cordoned off and every piece of evidence is being analyzed...the driver of the vehicle was on his knees next to Jared and I believe this is going to haunt him for the rest of his life...and I am sure he will also be punished accordingly.

There are lots of comments about us being on the M4...when I went up onto the bridge another cyclist was hit by a motor vehicle on the bridge...so on the M4 off the M4 it makes no difference...lets hope we can learn from this horrific incident.

I lost an old friend Jared and a new friend Richard today...RIP.

Sorry for your loss bud !

Really tragic and unnecessary

Sympathy to their family and friends

Yes, I saw that too!!!

Good grief how scary is that - its just unimaginable!

Makes me think - we decided to ride EARLY (like 4:30am) on New Years day here in good ol Nellies! nice and overcast with a slight drizzle - just perfect for a 100km ride.

Yoh until we realized we were up with the party goers that were on their way home

That was a scary morning!!!!

RIP and agree about control of drunk drivers at every level from bar to casino/hotel security, active policing etc. Doubtful anything will happen.

Off topic but the discussion about SA being 3rd world reminds me of Monty Python;  "you were looky......" etc. There is always a sh1ttier sh1thole.

Uber, no more excuses that we don't have public transport etc... if you know you are going to have a few drinks, use Uber, its simple, safe and inexpensive..

Leave your car at home...Don't leave the decision to say no to drinking and driving till its too late... chances are you will try drive home once you are drunk..

No more excuses to drink and drive..

jurre - maybe we all need to collectively ride 18000m of elevation on the 22 April

it would take 180 cyclist 1 lap each to complete this task...i would be prepared to do 1 or more laps to make this possible...anyone else keen?
