Hi guys

Just a quick question / poll / tip and trick share...

Do you stretch before and after riding? I normally just get on and get off, mainly because of time constraints. I know you should, but normally when I coach team sports (cricket and rugby) I take about 15min before and after. Obviously non of that happens when I cycle myself, and when it's mtb season, I don't make the kids stretch. We get on and ride. I've started commuting again after a long "rest" :whistling: and I can feel my legs and back after four consecutive days of riding.

What kind of stretching do you do personally? How long do you go at it? Any info will be appreciated.

Same here, never stretch. Just get on and ride.

Laterly been getting some lower back pain and some sensation iny right leg that seems to go a bit weak.

I have been doing a few specific stretches during the week like yoga ones that target the lower back but they can be tough do do cos i am not very flexible.

Only after, or after a very good warm up. Never without a decent warm up first.

Do many of the regular kinds of stretches, but since an MTB crash a few years back left me prone to lower back issues, I've since incorporated some yoga stretches, as these target the problematic areas (hip flexors) a lot better than the stretches I normally did. Pigeon pose has to be my favorite at the moment as it provides almost instant relief from lower back distresses i'm prone to.

Is that the one where you stand on the nearest statue and proceed to defecate all over it?

Sorry - in a dark humour space at the moment.

no, that is called the democracy stretch...

pretty close. that stretch on someone with a rather upset tummy, could rsult in ejection of sealant.

Stretch 2-3 times a week in the evenings and use a foam roller

Don't usually stretch when going cycling, first 5 to 10mins is taken easy to warm up.

Stretch before going running

I only stretch on a need to basis, if i feel a niggle, pain or ache that does not go away then i stretch the muscles or regions which are niggling.

Used to stretch a lot after every training, but came to the conclusion that stretching all the time did not provide any noticeable benefit... hence the on a need to basis.

Always stretch after exercise while still warm, or maybe a little during exercise if something is worrying you...never stretch with cold muscles.

Also stretching muscles is not recommended before a race or an event where you want your muscles to perform at their best. Warm up yes..stretch nope

Don't stretch before a ride...EVER!

If you are going to stretch, then do it like a cat. Little bits at a time through out the day as you need to.

Get a foam roller to roll out your muscles post ride.
