Road Bike Conundrum

First off, what's the difference between a normal road bike and a compact one?

Also I'd like to know what the difference is between the Giant TCR composite, Giant TCR Advanced, Giant TCR advanced SL and the Giant TCR Pro? In terms of the frame only.

Composite, Advanced and Advanced SL are different grades of carbon fibre used in construction.

Compact frames are usual more racey/stiff in frame design where standard is more relaxed and suited for long distance/touring.

Above is spot on. Just different grades of carbon, and supposed to offer more stiffness as it goes higher in guality for lighter weight. I have a TCR advanced SL. Is an awesome bike but a very aggressive geometry. Climbs well, flats are great, but can be a bit crazy on fast descents.

I disagree.....

A compact frame means the top tube slopes downwards. A standard frame has a straight top tube.

Let use Giant as an example. The TCR and Defy are both compact as both have sloping tubes. Yet the TCR is the racy stiff one and the Defy is the relaxed, comfortable one.

Then you get the Propel. You don't stiffer and more racy than that, yet it has a standard, straight top tube.

Cannondale is another example. The top tube is straight and is therefore a standard frame. Yet the Synapse is the comfort version and The Supersix is the stiff racy version.

What normally sets a comfort bike apart from a stiffer, racier type of frame is the head tube, which is slightly taller and the stays which have a degree of flex built into them

Compact frame consists of smaller triangles yes, Giant pioneered in this regards. Smaller triangles equal stiffer frames, but it all depends on the construction and material quality though.

I am currently on a TCR Advanced and its not a harsh ride at all, albeit it forces you into a very aggressive / racy position on the bike. The stiffness comes in when hard sprint efforts or climbing efforts are required, the bottom bracket does not flex about and you can feel(granted you have good wheels) how your efforts is more efficiently transferred into forward momentum.

Daar leer ek iets. :whistling:

Now please let all the teams riding Cannondale, Specialized, Pinarello, Bianchi, Canyon etc. in the Giro know that they are leaving valuable seconds, maybe even minutes out on the course by riding conventional geometry.

Anyone ride a supersix who is around 182cm, I want  to go 54cm frame, any suggestions?

I'm 179 and ride a medium. The Top tube was actually slightly shorter than my compact TCR M. I'd say it'd be fine as for you for sure my buddy is the same height as you and loves his Evo. Being a normal geo frame if looks big with very little seat post out but rides awesome.

If you're in the market I might be listing my immaculate 2015 11sp Ultegra, AMC tubeless wheel'd version in black very soon! ;)

Thanks for the clarification, I think I will go for the 54cm then, I had a 56cm Venge and had to run a 80mm stem as I was too stretched over the bike. I am rather flexible but have a rather short torso ish.

Hoping to run either a 110 or 120 stem on the 54cm.

Insurance is paying out only because I bought the venge frame new and had a warranty on it, with that in mind I am going to buy new just for the peace of mind. :)

I am 183 and ride a 56 cm Supersix Evo.  Some bike shops suggested all the way to 61 cm for me (long inside leg) so my previous bike was a 58 cm FELT F1, but that felt a bit stretched (I am NOT flexible - BULL by Fizik standars).  Richard Baxter did my set-up on the FELT and then recommended a 56 cm supersix = perfect fit - just had to adjust the saddle and flip the stem around for some height.

Ask you bike setter for the recommended size.

PS:  Good luck in finding a new supersix in SA - I could not even get a price for a Evo Hi-Mod,  but that was a month or two ago - maybe they have 2017 bikes by now.

Wow now I've learnt something. I thought it was just the build kits and the frames were exactly the same apart from paint. I've got a 2015 TCR Advanced 2. Love!

you should be fine on the 54cm , their site shows top tube of 54.7 so the 100mm stem might just work out. But you racing snakes can get quite low so the longer stems will probably work too.

I am 183cm, and on a Propel with top tube of 55cm, I still had to go down from a 100mm to a 90mm stem. Also short torso but not very flexible.

One thing I think was missed was the "Pro" one... now typically on the propel the "Pro" has a full carbon fork (the steerer tube and fork is carbon) where the normal advanced frame has a carbon fork which has an alloy steerer (heavier)

Apart from this they are all the same except for the SL which has better carbon and is also lighter - often the SL frames also has ISP which is an integrated seatpost (Seatpost and frame is 1 piece - requires cutting to the correct length for you)

Ha ha, I like to get low, but I ended up looking like superman...
