Team Exxaro - We do not need to heed to the LAW

So we have now established that hubbers believe:-

  • Cyclists do not need to stop at traffic lights
  • Cyclists are entitled to ride 2 or more abreast (motorists must be patient and wait)
  • No-one should ever question a cyclist or they deserve to be sworn at
  • Exxaro riders are a great bunch of guys
  • If someone breaks a law, you should take the time to educate them on what a traffic light (or similar) means (while not breaking point 3 above)
  • One hubber has even managed to bring in both the race card and Oscar P's court case before we hit page 3 (as he said - this is South Africa after all!)

As both a motorist and a long time cyclist, I am amazed at how arrogant some cyclists are (I always stop at red traffic lights and won't ride 2 abreast unless the yellow line is wide enough for both of us - it's not that hard to do!)

Thank you! Agreed!

Most of these offences by cyclists come down to laziness, except riding abreast obviously.

Definitely not hard to obey the rules of the road. If someone calls you out, take responsibility, Be LEKKER!

1000000% agree.

Don't want to hijack the thread but on Saturday I was shocked by the behavior of cyclists doing their pre CTCT warm up rides along the Atlantic seaboard. My girlfriend who is a newbi roadie couldn't believe her eyes.

Riding 3 and 4 abreast and riding simply as if the traffic lights did not exist. I think anyone on that road on Saturday needs to be thankful for the tolerant moods of the motorists coz collectively we were riding like a bunch of complete A-holes on Saturday.

Honestly the op has acknowledged he has broken the law as well, this is not about them not stopping at the red light but more about his EGO being hurt when he was told to F off, the thread was started at 6.50 therefore the incident must have happened very early so what's the big deal

I do not post very often on the hub.

But reading some of the comments on this topic and other topics on the hub latley I can  only shake my head in disbelieve.

It never ceases to amaze me how cyclists always defend the illegal actions of other cyclists, regardless of the facts. Seen it on this forum and many others.... No wonder we get so much flak from the larger community.

So we have now established that hubbers believe:-

  • If Cyclists do not need to stop at traffic lights, be civil about it
  • Cyclists are entitled to ride  sometimes 2 or more abreast (motorists must be patient and wait) , don't be a dwis about it, be lekker
  • No-one should ever question a cyclist or they deserve to be sworn at both cyclists and motorists need to learn to co-exist
  • Exxaro riders are a great bunch of guys
  • If someone breaks a law, you should may well take the time to educate them on what a traffic light (or similar) means (while not breaking point 3 above), it has a much more lasting and beneficial result opposed to being a dwis about it and not be lekker
  • One hubber has even managed to bring in both the race card and Oscar P's court case before we hit page 3 (as he said - this is South Africa after all!)

There, I fixed it for you. Bottom line is, don't be a dwis, be lekker.

In the South African context you must be a f-uckking idiot to tell someone to sexual- intercourse-off while riding a trapfiets. With people stripping their moere left-right and center I will not take on a person driving a 1 ton+ vehicle.

I say form a posse with torches and wild angry dogs and then spend your time waiting at that traffic light every morning until they come past again and jump the red light....

(all said in jest of course.... with the amount of wildly swinging handbags in this thread...)

I'm not 100% sure how seriously I'm meant to be taking your comments (lets all hug a tree and sing Kumbaya), but let's just say it sounds like (if the facts are correct) the cyclists were not being lekker and deserved to be treated like dwisses (if that's the appropriate plural). A simple apology for breaking the law (whether they meant it or not) would have solved everything on the spot (lekker).

Hell's Bell's .... what's with all the defending of riders jumping red traffic lights!

OP, keep us posted RE your email to the kit sponsors please.

All the posters slamming the OP. A red light is a red light, and it should not be jumped......basic rules of the road.

Ag BS man. He was not trying to convince us that he has never broken the law, nor is he claiming to be a saint. The guys did something wrong and they must take responsibility. Simple.

Whats this nonsense of giving the OP uphill for pointing this out? His post was not rude or aggressive.

CL/C100 and many other clubs/teams are often lambasted for doing the exact same thing. It is this kind of negative coverage on the Hub and other social media that should act as deterrent for this tupe of behaviour.

As for the statement that if you have broken the law ONCE you cannot point anything out, you know thats a *** statement. That means that YOU can have no opinion on Taxi's, drunk drivers that kill cyclists, corruption, murder.... because surely you have gotten a speeding fine before.

These riders should not have skipped the light, then they should definately not have sworn at somebody while wearing sponsors kit. They made other peoples names gat.

+1 on this. you hit the nail perfectly on the head!

I for one am ecstatic that argus/ctct fever has come and gone.

The amount of self entitled dwissis (is that a thing now?) on the road leading up to the event has sent most motorists in the cape over the edge.

Guys blatantly skipping lights, riding 3 abreast down lakeside main road, all pulling up at majour intersections and standing in a mob in front of the cars and then.... not being able to clip in when it turns green (hahahaha) holding everybody up and so on...

As someone who rides the same roads all year round I can see the OP's point. Enraging motorists by bad behavior will certainly not help in bridging the apathy gap, especially when they are the roads you frequent which usually means sharing it with motorists of the same time/route habits...

I didn't ride yesterday for fear of injury this close to a few more important events but was amazed at nearly being taken out by more than one car with bikes strapped to the back during a very pleasant training ride round the peninsula. No one is innocent.

Bottom line is, it's not ok to skip traffic lights. BUT if you see such sacrilege being performed , instead of driving up next to them enraged and incensed with a vengeful tone of disdain and disregard, pull up slowly and ask to speak to the guy in charge.

One will find that with the right approach, a lot can be achieved.

It amazes me how so often, a well reasoned  post, with some common sense (like this one) can turn a thread. This one stopped the STUPID lynching of the OP in its tracks.
