does this mean if I have a 9 speed cassette, with a triple up front, I am in the dark?

Nah Slowbee, just go 1x9! I just found a 12-36 casette (brand new), running a 30t NW chainring. My ghetto 1 X system. Works a charm.

Ja, but what's that cassette gonna cost? Like R7k? Pfftt!

On ze udder hand....I might score some second hand XX1 stuff for peanuts from the Lemmings running after the latest and greatest.  :whistling:

Me - I love my FD.

Training bike is 1x and that's fine. Less stuff - cheaper to run etc and if I run out of gears it just makes me stronger while I hoof it up the climb.

Racing bike is 2x and that's fine. Enough gears in case I hit something like Rusty Gate climb ala 2014 Epic and a wide enough spread that I can pedal comfortably on 99% of ups AND downs.

To me 11-36 10spd and 11-40 11spd already feel like they're starting to show gaps between the gears. Not so much on the dirt where you're distracted by the bumping/jarring but on road you can certainly feel the gaps between the gears.

12spd 10-50 is gonna show bigger gaps that I aint gonna like that.

To each their own though - if simplicity/weight loss are your top factors than  1x12 it is for you.
