..............What do you guys do when travelling with a rifle ................

.............what do you guys do with safe keys.................?

First thing you need is a hard case to transport it in. The sturdier the better. No soft bag is good enough when you have a car full of stuff and you travel bad roads. I just find I have fewer issues with things getting damaged and telescopes going out of kilter if I use a hard case.

If we have to stop somewhere for fuel or food, someone ALWAYS stay with the vehicle. Occasionally we are lucky enough that we can park and sit in a restaurant (like Matjiesfontein recently) and have the car 5 metres away and in full view, but that is not often. Mostly we take padkos or buy something, then pull off in a quiet spot (never along the N1) and have a break and a bite there.

It becomes more tricky if you stay over somewhere, so I always ask about the possibility of locking it in a safe. I have on occasion locked a bunch of hard cases together to a bed by using a bicycle lock I had handy - just so I could relax around the braai.

About the key - Ideal is to take it off site when the house is left empty.  Never underestimate where your domestic will dig. Carrying it around can be a schlep and present difficulties like losing it. So, if you decide to hide it somewhere, think REALLY far outside the box! The proverbial key under the doormat or in the pot plant is simply not good enough. How about in the kennel of your boerboel?

Bought a new toy this week a CZ 200S in .177.  Air rifles have come a mighty long way since I was a kid hunting doves on the farm! These PCP air rifles are pretty cool pieces of engineering and the performance is prety impressive.  Just getting to know its capabilities but fun for practicing fast moving shoots and keeping the eye in for irregular hunting trips.

went shooting a .22 on Saturday. Just pigeons and guinea fowl on a small farm. What a load of fun. Drove around in the bakkie and shot out of the vehicle. The farmer was happy as they eat his seeds and we had loads of fun. Have to look for a .22 now:)

First rifle I ever shot with. Have you ever shot with a .22 hornet?

You are going to struggle to get the .22 licensed, unless you are staying on a farm or have regular access to a farm, or do sport shooting with the .22

They are quite stingy with .22 licenses.

Just have to get your motivation really solid. Dedicated hunters normally motivate that they use it for  practice because of cost savings with cheap ammo vs extremely expensive ammo for most big bores. Owners of farms and smallholdings motivate for vermin control. If it conceivable, motivate for target shooting, Fathers of children motivate for using it to teach markmanship. Just get your story watertight.

was hoping to shoot a hornet over the week end but we didn't get time. There's a nice hornet for sales on one of the gun sites at the moment

A friend of mine has had a few .22's licensed without any problem. Would probably use the motivations you all list.

Chepar ammo to practice

will get motivations from a few farms I am access to. My inlaws have a farm as well so hopefully will be ok

any will enter the .22 sports shooting series

But will only get it next year so we'll see

very cool. The .22 bug has bitten bad....i really want one. But will have to wait for my current license to come through and finish paying for this first rifle before I buy another. Although my wife already approves because she wants to come shooting as well. Saw a few good looking .22 rifles for R1k yesterday
