Sounds exciting

Yeah, it was nuts and over in a flash. I should mention that he has been shooting with that rifle since he was 12. It helps when you know your gun.

Mostly exotic species imported to NZ. Things like fallow deer or mountain goats. Also some red deer if I recall right.

Keen to get a Tikka T3 probably in .223, .243 or maybe .270;

The .270 has a bit of a kick but is a nice overall cal and bullet has a fairly straight flight so easy to shoot.

My eldest is 13 and shoots it without any problems.

10 year old is still on the .22 rifle.

Dammit, that's a nice setup. I am also planning some time or other to get such a setup but with a Howa 6.5 Creedmoor.

I currently have a .270 Howa Hunter with a beautiful traditional Walnut stock.

6.5 Creedmoor is an awesome caliber.

.270 with a suppressor/silencer will take a lot of the recoil away.

.243 doesn't have a lot of recoil, but it can be tamed even more with a small suppressor/silencer.

I have shot the 6.5CM a few times at the club and is a great caliber for longer shots but has a huge recoil compared to the .270.

On the last club shoot  saw a few guys have moved over to the .300Norma Mag for long range shooting and were getting tight groups at 1000m.

Guys think cycling is expensive until you start shooting

The NF was a gift from a bunch of guys i worked with when i finished up.

The stainless barrel was originally on a laminate stock but i was having endless issues with it getting wet in the rain.Bought the Xray chassis on a black Friday sale.

I use a 308 for larger game 250m-350m. (Koedoe, Gemsbok, Eland).

.243 100m-350m (Springbok) and 100m-250m in good conditons (Koedoe, Gemsbok).

The 6.5 is a very versatile buy one shoot all tipe of rifle in my opinion.

What do they hunt in NZ?

Red , Sika, Sambar,Javan Rusa and white tailed deer, Tahr, feral goats, hare...and possums. All of which are considered pests which makes blasting them somewhat less...squeamy, I spose....

My boys are 5 and 3, so I reckon .243 with suppressor will be a good place to start. Maybe get a .22 as well, always handy for hare and possum...

In our parts, stainless is a must; a carbon fibre stock is also a good idea as you tend to do a lot of walking and stalking through some hectic steep terrain, so you want your walking stick as light as possible. It's not the savanna, that's for sure!
