Bike discount.de can be cheaper and they happily ship here - even complete Radon bikes.

I think its worth getting XT an rear derailleur over SLX - the SLX item is far heavier due to abundant use of steel instead of ali and the XT cassette also weighs significantly less. Not sure about the brakes, but I doubt there is major weight to be saved there and the performance is allegedly on a par.

The new SLX crank looks better than the old one. Does it use a different BB as XT does?

Anybody checked yet whether the new M7000 rear derailleur works with the old 10 speed shifter ? M670

Why would it? The ratchet / gear selector (sorry can't find the term now) only allows for 10 gear shifts. With the 10-speed SRAM shifters you could replace the ratchet to upgrade to 11 speed, but as far as I know you can't do that with Shimano...

You will at minimum require 4 new components coming from 10x speed. shifter, RD, chain and cassette.

Why shouldnt it ? The derailleur will move as many shifts as the shifter allows . I am just asking as I am not sure that the "ratio/yaw" that the derailleur moves will be the same as the old 10 speed SLX

If you pair it with a 10 speed shifter it should work in theory

On the Mrs. bike I have a brand new chain and an 11-42 cassette (Sunrace 10 speed) running my old XT 10 speed derailleur (1 x 10). The problem is that to accomodate the 42 cog the B-Screw has to be turned in very far and the top pulley wheel while in the 11 up to 21 tooth sprockets is far away from the cassette. I know that the newer 7000 and 8000 series rear derailleurs have addressed this problem (I am running an XT M8000 1 x 11 on my bike) . Hence my question is would the new M7000 derailleur work on a 10 speed shifter , it will save me a bit of cash until I need to replace the cassette and chain with which I will then go M7000 everything

My understanding is that 11 speed spacing is slightly narrower than the 10 speed spacing. In such a case you might have some problems to begin with. But in any case, the 10 speed shifter will render your 11 speed RD to a 10 speed RD...which kind of defeats the purpose.

If you are referring to running a 10 speed setup with a the m7000 RD...It might work, but I can't imagine that you will have the same smooth shifting as a normal 10x combo.

Shimano 10x: 36t Cassette:  11-13-15-17-19-21-24-28-32-36T

Shimano 11x: 42t Cassette:  11-13-15-17-19-21-24-28-32-37-42T

So your bottom range is similar, but again, spacing as well as offset differences might complicate matters.

The question still remains why!?... Okay now I see why...

One suggestion is to check yourself? Using your M8000 RD... But it's a lot of time & effort and you'll probably have to redial to RD back on your own setup.

My final suggestion is just to take the bite, buy an upgrade and sell off the old parts. Throw in some Sunrace components to save cash. It is not that expensive anymore (yet..?).

Thanks Koei , I am heading in that direction . Would just love to know if the system is "backwards compatible" . Shimano wont tell you as they want you to buy the newer stuff
