RIP: The ability to overtake on an MTB

Shouting TRACK is for amateurs - I just out brake and block pass into corners.

Even that is me being nice - normally I just muscle my way through and if they don't immediately jump into the veld I give their bar a little nudge on the way past. Clears up the track nicely.

If I'm in a good mood I'll skip on the bar nudge and just flick them with my back wheel as I wheelie past - that way their risk of crashing drops to 50/50 and I feel like I've done my bit to improve race snake/hacker relations.

All of the above is theoretical anyway cos I'm always first.

Where do I collect my "ekke is cooler as jy" badge? I mean this has to be the least passive aggressive I'm farking awesome but don't really want to say as much just pretend I'm cool and fast and have the need and skills to pass people at will post on this useless thread....

Is this called boxing clever? Hehehe

Of course you can overtake on singletrack.

You scope a safe line, tell the person you are going past on the left/right, commit to said line and send it. Remember to not be a box.

Sometimes people are slowing singletrack, and obnoxious as well, then usually I send the shortcut line between switchbacks. No use arguing with stubborn people, just drop them properly when you get ahead. Remember to not be a box.

Oh, and if it is just a ride, stop and give a slower guy some space or a descent. If you are stuck behind said rider on a ride, give him/he some pointers at the end ie get out of the saddle, brake before the corner, look out of the corner etc. And Remember to not be a box.

NO NO NO NO!

There is nothing more that needs to be said. That was perfect. Just take a bow while the applause ring out, and then calmly exit.

Sure you are the guy that was shouting "TRACK" a couple of years back running faster than guys were riding up that hill somewhere outside Dullstroom. Priceless   :whistling:

I don't get phased if I end up behind someone slower. I just go their pace. If they realy slow you can practice wheelies. I stopped strava a long time ago so I have no motivation to get frustrated. At trail heads after a climb I need to catch my breath anyways and just let people go down before me. People see the goggles, think I'm fast and offer to let me go first. I'm usually gasping while trying to explain that I only wear them so people don't see me cry. By the time I catch my breath its already dark and everyone has gone home. Then the track is clear and I'm ready to pin it.

NO NO NO NO!

Okay, I'm confused.

is it no to being nice when overtaking?

No to Remember to not be a box?

No to stopping and giving a gap?

No to giving advice?

Or is it no to overtaking in singletrack?

seems like going off line is the swear word in this string?

well stating the bleeding obvious - going off line f..ks up the trails. Get a hundred okes doing that every weekend and pretty soon you'll have a 3 meter wide jeep mtb track. But I suppose then you won't have any overtaking issues.

You are right, with a track that wide, overtaking will be a breeze, but expect a thread on the hub moaning about the trail being dumbed down....

Aaah, that clears up my confusion. Tapatalk doesn't show fancy things like highlighted colours.

To be honest, I've only had to skip switchbacks twice, neither times Dis I put anyone's life in danger, caused erosion (grassy fields) or left a mark that will lead to repeated use.

Where are these trails with kilometer after kilometer of pure single track? Down here in the WC we have pesky roads and jeep track every couple of hundred meters that we have to use to pass people. It's a bind.
