RIP: The ability to overtake on an MTB

Its simple for me.

If I am in front of you, I expect you to pass off the racing line, not tell me to move off the line. I will slow slightly when you wish to pass off the racing line to accommodate you. If the trail is very technical in nature I will stop for you to pass at a point where I am not compromised when I want to get going again.

If you are in front of me, I will only pass if I can do it safely and comfortably when moving off the line. Please scrub off some speed to make it easier and less risky. If it is very technical, I will patiently wait for you to decide if there is a place where I can get a gap, or I will park on the side and let you get some day light before I get going again and see if I can catch you.

well stating the bleeding obvious - going off line f..ks up the trails. Get a hundred okes doing that every weekend and pretty soon you'll have a 3 meter wide jeep mtb track. But I suppose then you won't have any overtaking issues.

Off line on the track is fine though. There's normally a "racing line" and about 2 or 3 "banzai lines"

But if we were to get clever, we'd constantly be employing the frenchies attitude. Anything is legal as long as it's within the tape...

I still remember the first time I passed someone on a sketchy downhill by going onto the 'tricky' side. Sunday was a great ride.

As do I on the downhills. Just remember that when I am going down a rocky downhill, I am going down there as fast as I CAN, and borderline at my skills limit, so I dont have much in the way of reserves to change lines willy nilly, or open beer bottles in my rear wheel, one handed while doing wheelies.

If I hear a faster rider come up behind me, I will always almost immediately ask. "Want to come past" if they say "Yes", then I tell them, "Cool as soon as I can I will move to the LEFT". Often though they say "nah bud you keep going, I'll pass when I can"....

So moral of the story is, show consideration and you will probably get a postive response.

Agreed....it really is that simple!

I never yell "track!"  I wait for a gap in the terain or a good spot let the rider know I am passing and on which side and ALWAYS

ALWAYS thank them

It's all so simple!

The latest innovation - a BELL

You ding it when someone is in front of you.

You ding it when someone shouts "track!"

And that 1/2K bell says it all.

You need a bell!

You are right, with a track that wide, overtaking will be a breeze, but expect a thread on the hub moaning about the trail being dumbed down....

That was a good thread...what a laugh. Cradle MTB trails if I remember

More like cradle The MTB 4 Lane Highway the way it was portrayed. Like some national road that runs through the Cradle, pretty sure SANRAL should put up E-Tags tolls there soon.
