I have a press Fit BB30 on my road bike, its done 6500KM, considering I am a heavy rider 97KG, do you think this BB life has come to an end, or maybe i should ask how long do they generally  last.

I have developed a creak in the BB area, rotating the crank without the chain it seems smooth, however I cannot simulate the action under pressure?

Lose weight. It seems to be an issue in your life, seeing as you mention it where it bears no relevance. If you've gotten good mileage out of it, buy a new one on special at CWC and fit it yourself. That way you'll be able to do a first hand inspection of the site and better understand the mechanics of your drive chain

How long is a piece of string?

How do you wash your bike? How often do you wash it? What kind of terrain do you ride? All of these can affect the life of your BB. On my most commonly used bike I do over 8000km a year and haven't changed the BB for a few years and its still fine, in fact its probably about 6 years old and I think I have opened it up and serviced it once or twice(deore XT) but this old 26 inch HT hardly see's any dirt unless its a pavement as its used purely for training and it gets washed fairly often and never comes close to a pressure washer.

Creaking doesn't mean its worn. Also the sound might seem like its coming from the BB but it could be resonating through the frame from somewhere else. BUT a creaking BB isn't that uncommon especially when you stand/put the power down like you mentioned so if it isnt creaking you not riding hard enough  .

6500km's is nothing for a BB especially on a road bike. A creak is not likely to be due to a worn BB. More likely a case of refitting with proper lubrication of parts will solve it.

Once a few years ago I could have sworn my bb was shot. The noises were so loud and so obviously coming from the bb I was sure I needed a new one. Turns out it was just my seat post that had got a bit dirty and was making a moer of a noise that sounded for all money that it was coming from the bb. It is amazing how noises can travel in a frame.

Happened to me too. I think a good strip and clean of all parts aer likely to sort out your problem

6500km is not high milage for a BB. If it still rotates smoothly with no grinding or rumbling noise and no freeplay then bearings are OK.

Like others said, creaking can come from elsewhere but if confirmed to be from the BB then reseating the bearings with appropriate lube, loctite bearing compound or carbon assembly paste according to the frame manufacturer's instructions should sort it .

Thanks Guys

I have experienced a very similar noise on on MTB, turned out to be a cleat on my shoe, I think the BB is the soft target and we target the BB first.

Let me strip the crank, Re Press, and lube including the spacers, hopefully this will sort it,

Pressfit BB's always make a noise.  I'm sure when you take it out there will be a bit of grit in there between the BB and the frame.  Clean, grease and refit - should be good as new.

While you're at it, so the same thing on your seatpost and rear dropouts too.

I need to spend some quality time with my three bikes. All of them are groaning and creaking like a donkey car with a WP license plate. Also had that misconception that my BB was shot on the MTB, meanwhile it was a dirty seatpost.

Actually not working this weekend, so wash'nlube... wait, probably should be riding? :whistling:

I agree, had this crap on my last 2 dualies and I swear I will never buy a bike that requires these ever again. It has to be the crappest idea yet for a BB....

So I removed everything, the BB inside looked rather dirty with fine sand.

Re Lubed the Bearing cleaned up and pressed in.

The Park Tools BBT 30 does help, while you can do without it the blue drift on the spindle of the tool makes sure the pressure is equal on the bearing as you knock it out, also the silver drifts help press it back in equally.

Let me test ride this weekend and see if the noise has gone, if not I will move to the next part

I am in your weight range and my story is as follows: I only started riding again in 2013 and bought a new carbon aero bike in APril 2014.

MY first BB lasted less than a year and had it replaced as it was shot. REplaced in Mar 2015.

I then had a warranty claim on the frame and the frame the manufacturer replaced it with is a BB30 so a new BB installed in January 2016. My March 2016 after around 1000 kays it was shot and had to be replaced. So in essence I have replaced 2 BB's with around 8000km's road riding in total.

So yes, it is possible it is shot .
