Try Boltfast in Epping they have all sorts of strange thread types available.

That bolt has an odd thread - will scratch around in my odd bolt bin too.

Have you made your own rear handles at all - some of my standard handles are quite uncomfortable. I have a fairly wide hand.

I am now looking for a Stanley #8 and 41/2

Also looking for a nice BLOCK PLANE urgently.

When I'm 65 I'm going to build my own smoothing plane.

.

The Stanley block plane off the shelf retails at R550...bought one a week back

It needs at least 4 hours of sole polishing/trueing as this step is not done at factory any more...and the second hand market has very few online...hit the antique shops.

My experience of the past month

No, not yet.  Although my #7s tote has seen much better days.  I was thinking of doing some in Cocobolo.  Yes, the Stanley totes all seem to be too thin for us Boere.

My father used to say  "n Boer het 'n groot hand want hy het 'n groot ....".  No need to fill that in myself.  You get the drift.

Not uber old, but it's a Stanley and has a wood handle / brass bits, inherited it from my wife's grandad some years back, will do a refurb on it sometime, clean up the handle and blade.

A quiet little secret regarding planes - and I'm probably doing myself a huge disservice telling anyone this ...

There's a pawn shop on Voortrekker Road in Maitland, just opposite McDonald's, that has used planes in very good condition. (It also has some horrible, cheap bicycles outside.)

Sssssh.

Anyone know where I can get a nice Japanese-type hand wood saw in GP?

Top one is a Dozuki - thinnest blades of Japanese saws

Two below are Kataba - no steel back and you get it in cross cut or rip tooth

What do you classify as heavy? Off the shelf I can probably assist with Meranti, may have some Oak in the required size, have Iroko in stock but not sure of the width. Will check in the am.

Does anyone have a contact that can get me the following wood in joburg:

Requirements:

-must be a Heavy

-35mm to 50mm thick

-250mm to 300mm wide

-can cut it to lenght for me (about 450/500mm in length x4)

Please :)

The Iroko we have is 76 x 200 x 4000, so size is not suitable, have red oak in 38mm and white oak in 50mm.

Demand for hardwoods isn't what it used to be, people don't want to pay for it, so we buy it in on special order.

Meranti, I can help with 50 x 304 boards that I can cut for you.

It has always puzzled me why Meranti is classed as a hardwood
