Don't think you will be monitoring HRM when swimming? So will be a perceived effort.

If you know your max HR for running and cycling, you can use it as a general guide and see how it feels and adjust accordingly.  Although the fitter you get the lower your HR will be so then will be more based on perceived effort

ok makes sense thank you.

Any suggestion for your 1st event?

There is a nice and well organized event in April, by Trinity Sports

Good way to get a feel of what its all about

I will probably be there again in prepping for Durban

Having used fittrack and now trainingpeaks, I prefer the trainingpeaks plans as you can monitor fitness and fatigue a lot better. (but I am training for IM so need to watch those a lot more closely). Whichever you use, for you at the moment it is more about getting an idea of a structured training plan so that you train right and not just do what you think is right.  Once you have done your first sprint race, you will learn a lot and adapt accordingly.  Enjoy it, it is a journey of discovery!

Aye - learning a ton about myself. It's also a bit of an emotional roller coaster. Some days I am like "I can do this - nothing will stop me". Other days I wonder wtf I am doing and hope someone would smack me over the head to give me a wake up call.

Hi, yes I also got the TP app downloaded and it is working well.  Thx for the programs as well.  I took the sprint program, and I am currently doing more than what is in the program, expect for the swimming, which is a bit of an issue.  But nice to see the format, and as you stated earlier, not going all out in every session, but sometimes doing lower effort but with more reward.

If you are doing more, maybe do the olympic distance plan, then you will breeze the sprint distance :)

Ok cool will have a look thx.  I am fairly happy with my run and cycle training, still the swim is a challenge because of availability of facility.

cheers and good luck till PE

I was reading a race report on Facebook written by someone who recently completed the New Zealand IM, and just had to share this excerpt with you lot:

"In the absence of war, Ironman races provide some of the most extraordinary scenes of human suffering."

Can anybody recommend in and around Alberton/JHB south where I can practice open water swimming, preferably with a group? I currently do go to cradle moon and bas lake on occasion but hoping to find something closer to home, or at least as part of a group/ buddy system.

and adventure racing takes it that one step further...

So I have entered the Bela Bela 5150 and I have a quick question about the cycle.

Would it pay to borrow or buy/sell a road bike just for the 40km? I have a 650b dual suspension bike only. I am only racing myself but I do need to beat a friend or 2!

Will some extra training make up for what I won't have in gearing/aero/rolling resistance.
