Had a disastrous day yesterday from the start.

The race had a rolling start and i started 45 minutes into the race.Got kicked in my ribs which i had broken a few months ago and ended up swallowing quite a bit of water.

Got to my bike and someone had knocked it off the rack and damaged my rear derailleur and i couldn't use my top 3 easy gears.Suffered seriously on the hill and there were plenty.Biggest climb was 800m long with avg of 8% and maximum of 22%

Got off the bike and it was 35Deg and getting hotter.I ended up vomiting for about 10 minutes and tried running again but i was weak and everything was cramping. My first 10km took me almost 2 hours and i have had to do 30km in 5 hours. There was just no way that that was going to happen so i bailed at 11km mark.

It was a learning experience and will do many things differently for next year.

I was really hoping that this would be #6 but wasn't meant to be....still at 5.5.

Hey Dude that sucks Balls......But then a wise man (ICM) said: sometimes you win and sometimes you learn,,,"" and I want to add sometimes you come back stronger from adversity than from success. Still good work out there and hanging tough!

Reading your race report reminded me of this book - I did a search and it looks as if no-one has mentioned it in the topic, so if anyone is looking for a truly brilliant account of a couch potato converting to an Ironman this is it.  It's truly brilliant.

Noob question here, I have been cycling for a few years now and recently started training for tri -I plan on doing my first sprint distance in October and then IM 70.3 Durban next year if all goes well.
Strong cyclist and runner, my swimming is holding me back at the moment, but slowly but surely, I am getting there.
I would classify myself as intermediate, seeing as I can easily do 10k runs, 100km rides and I have been doing a lot of weight training and can handle the training volume. (I track every calorie, train 6 days a week, I think you get the idea  :P).

So that is my background, now my question - I understand the benefits of strength training and I enjoy it, but when do you guys do your leg strength training, since you are basically constantly on your legs with endurance work? I feel like I can never find a good spot to slot it in, since recovery is also a super important part of the process.Any advice?

This is purely personal and my experience. If you refer to strength training as conditioning then I would suggest go see a Bio or such like. Get an assessment and start working on those shortfalls that they pick up. As our sport is a very repetitive movement thing we neglect some muscles and that can cause problems if we compensate. My Bio had me doing some really NAF stuff at the beginning. But the incremental improvement from this targeted approach helped me a lot. Make sure you gym session is tailored and effective.

So after three years of use my Orca goggles need replacing, well they are actually still good to go but i want to replace them .

I've seen these TYR googles, does anyone have any feedback on them or any recommendations on alternatives?

Dont have any experience with these specific models but I did try these about two years back.

And I can tell you they were crap.  Fogged up from the first time i used them.  In cold water or warm water, no matter which tricks i tried to prevent fogging.

From a comfort point they were comfortable.

I have had my adventures with goggles from Speedo to Aquasphere Kayenne to whatever and eventually found what works for me: Zoggs Predator Flex-the first series not the Predator 2 as it has been getting bad reviews. The predators really seal and I have not had a problem with it misting up or leaking and you dont have to tighten them to headshrinking tight to get a good seal.  http://corsport.co.za/30-performance

I have the TYR special ops now,

maybe a tiny bit wide (because they're nonadjustable on the nose) but super super comfortable

I have the same goggles, photochromic and very comfortable and no misting-up problems but I do put a drop of baby shampoo in them every now and again.

I've wanted to try the zogg predator now for a while. But quite a bit to lay out if they don't fit well. I've got a narrow face

Absolutely disappointed in Garmin. Bought myself a fresh out of the box Forerunner 735XT and it’s given the ghost after one open water swim. Will have to start the warranty process now.
