Hi All

I'm doing the Suncity Ultra this weekend and want to know if there is a way for family to track my progress through the race using an cellphone app?

Something possibly like the app used for Ironman or 947.

I checked Ultra's site and the race will be time by Finish Time.

Thanks

I'm struggling with the age old question, to buy a TT bike or not. I have a oldish but descent (2009 Raleigh RC7000) road bike with a Ultegra 10 speed. Not the lightest bike around but it works.

Only started doing triathlon last year, and did my first IM70.3 in Durban. Now the gogga has bitten me, and up next is the IM70.3 in Durban, IM70.3 in East London, and then the Full IM in PE in 2020.

I have tri bars on the road bike, and I have a really comfortable setup and my cycling times are not bad. Aiming for 2:50 bike in Durban and hopefully 5:40 overall.

Every fiber in me tells me that the TT bike will not make such a big difference, and to focus more on my running, but the N+1 in me just wants to buy a TT machine....

Any suggestions?

And it will save the legs slightly for the run, when compared to a road bike geometry.

Hi All

So I did my first 70.3, Ultra Suncity, this weekend and all went to plan besides the bike were I found it massively uncomfortable being on the saddle. I have had a fit (at Triosport) and have been riding on the bike for a few months now however most of those rides were using bibs and not a trisuit (my fault for not doing long rides in a trisuit. Currently use a Huub core range trisuit) and hence didn't feel any discomfort.

The saddle in question is a fizik tritone tri saddle. Should I keep the saddle and try get used to riding with the trisuit or rather look for another one and I so, are there any suggestions?

Thanks

I'd like to tag along on your question with regards to saddle choice. Same story: Did Sun City Ultra, which was my first event doing 90odd kms in TT position on road bike with clip-on bars.

Had a full bike-fit done prior.

Perennial area got very uncomfortable around halfway. Everything else was perfect.

So I would like to hear what you guys think about various saddle options.

EDIT: I currently have the Specialized Toupe saddle for my road riding and it has served me very well for the past two years.

I actually struggled to find cycling bibs that had thin cushioning. For this exact reason - I didn't want to get used to the thickness because it can actually mess with your setup, let alone comfort etc.

Whether you need to try a new saddle, have you given it a real go? As in for long enough? I once complained to someone at a cycle shop abut my lower back hurting - they asked how much I cycled and then laughed at me and my fair-weather routine. Stick with it for as long as you think reasonable, then try find a tester/loan saddle if you're still bleak. Its a really tricky thing to try work out which suits best.

I first got an ISM Adamo with my tri-bike. I really wanted the split nose saddle, and wanted it to work for me. Year or so later of not-too-unreasonable discomfort I switched to Cobb JOF 55. Thinner fit, much much more comfortable Suits my sit-off-the-front at times, as well as enough space to slide my butt back when sitting up on the hills. Expensive, but worth it.

Saw 2 Saffers out riding along the Mosel river this morning for Sundays Lux 70.3.

Quite a few on the starters list.

Any Hublanders here?

What heart rate monitors do you use for tri's? I'm struggling with my Wahoo Tickr. I wore it during my swim at IM70.3 Durban, and it just did not work after that the whole bike and run leg.

Edit: I don't care for heart rate data during my swim. I had it on to save time during transition

I use to use a Garmin HRM-Tri, but did not enjoy the restrictiveness on the run.

As I now pace using a power meter on both bike (quarq) and run (stryd), i don't really monitor HR anymore whilst racing (more the occasional check based on feel).  I do however record HR using the wrist HRM with my Fenix 5, which although not as accurate as a chest strap is good enough for me to glance at should I need during the bike and run leg and is useful for post race analysis.

Thanks. Unfortunately I don't have a power meter. I train with one (Kickr) and from that I got an idea on what my heart rate was during different training sessions, and what my Heart rate needed to be on the bike during my race.

Must say I was left in the dark when I got onto my bike and there was no reading from my heart rate monitor. Pacing is everything on the bike as well as the run, and need something that works. Last year I tried the wrist based, but it was very inaccurate, and can also throw you mentally off if your watch shows your wrist based heart rate is 85% plus, and your not even going fast or feeling tired
