You are right.

Cycling is the most discriminatory sport in existence. Experienced, well trained and fit cyclists start when the weather is the generally the best with less wind and cooler. And they finish well before it gets hot and unpleasant when the newer, less well trained and less fit have to ride.

It is almost as if there is a deliberately nasty initiation that every one has to pass to get to start earlier in order to keep the riff-raff out.

Only consolation for those starting late and enduring the heat and wind is that those starting up front didn't get there through a lucky packet draw, everyone started at the back at some stage.

Except if you are happy to wear the PPA Stay Wider lumo yellow shirt and apply to start in the Safe Cycling group and improve from there. Only way I know of not having to pay your dues in the hot windy early/late afternoon.

Some people pay extra to ride at 10:00, it may be their second lap but they still do it ????

Always interesting how most people disregard the fact that wind normally picks up during the day. Guys that race from 6-9 normally have less wind to deal with.

Us guys that ride from 9-2 face more wind, have more wind resistance and stay on the road longer. That's my excuse anyway.

More time to enjoy the scenery and the ride :-)

But what about those fires around CPT? They seem crazy this year or is this normal?

only 7.5 weeks to go, I still haven't been on my bike, it's been over a month now. But it's so coooold! I still take my regular bike to go to the train station in my regular warm clothes and winter coat but it's no fun. The upside: no risk of getting my bike stolen: the lock is frozen :-)

Historically there are always fires in the Cape, I remember when I was in primary school the front of the mountain burnt 3 times in 5 years. It happens from time to time

...............But what about those fires around CPT? They seem crazy this year or is this normal? .............

Yes and no. Or as they say in Afrikaans: Ja-nee!

Fires are normal in our dry hot Mediterranian summers, but because we had a drier than normal winter, I think the fire season moved earlier. Normally February and March are the dangerous months. This year it started in December already. It is normal because of the indigenous Fynbos vegetation that naturally becomes too thick and stagnate after about 10 years of growth. Then it needs fire to regenerate and for seeds to germinate. Many of our amazing wildflower seeds cannot germinate without fire. It naturally burns in a  5 to 10 year cycle.

On the peninsula we had the massive fire 2 years ago, so that won't burn again so soon. It will burn small bits, or burn itself out, mostly grass fires and those are easily extinguished. It will not have another runaway wildfire like the last big one that caused the route change last time you were here. That will only happen in another 5 years or so.

The big fires we had this year were all in the Overberg area, far away from the Cycle Tour route. The fires close to the route were all smallish but got into the news because they involved people and burnt housing. They were put out within a day or two.

I really don't mind at all starting wherever...

It costs a phone booth full of money for me to do this every second year, so I am definitely going to take as long as possible to enjoy the Tour...

My index is 17.17 based on my K2C time of 4:05. If this is an early enough start I'll consider a double Argus again this year.

I see the cycletour seeding site looks up to date: http://seeding.cycletour.co.za.

Anyone have an idea of which start groups match the seeding index range based on last year's groups? I fear I'm slipping backwards this year...

I see the Carnival City has a penalty of 5. This doesn't do my seeding any favours :cursing:

Does anyone perhaps know why it has a penalty?? It was in November last year, so it can't be for time unless somebody screwed up.

All races are penalized except the Premier seeding events.

Any idea when they will release the route for 2017? I presume will be the same as last year, although always nice to have confirmation.

And when will start times be available?
