Riding at Suikerbosrand?

I heard some jobergers talking about suikerbosrand last weekend and found the segment on strava.  1200m is alot of climbing for a 57km loop.  The steepest gradient I found was only 13.7% If Im not mistaken.  The gradients seem fine, but I think the combination of the altitude and the lack of any flats to recover would hurt most people :w00t: .  I would be keen to give this ride a go.  The scenery looks amazing

scenery?? to busy bleeding from the eyeballs to see anything ????

I think today I saw one piece on the climb from the car park at 15% ????????????

83km 1400m climbing.

Road there and back is good compared to most JHB roads, no shoulder but very few cars. Nice and flat so good warm up and cool down.

And the bonus is its slightly downhill back to the circus .

There are plenty flat and downhill km's in the reserve to recover - as Patch said, when the wind blows it gets so much harder.

When you come up to Joburg, you know who to contact... [emoji16]

thanks for confirmation (365 days).

Hard luck on your crash - luckily you seem to be okay.

If the guys were in front of you, how could they help... or did you go racing passed them and then crash?

They passed me on the previous corner and were half a bike length in front of me when i locked the back brake which produced lovely screeching sounds, which was then followed up with some very creative wording at the pitch of a 6 year old girl and then there was the sound of a cyclist going off the beaten track. Guess with the wind rushing through their ears they might not have heard me but either way my bike is fine, i'm good to go, bar a few scratches and my chainring which dug into my calf and left 5 nice bite marks.

Me tooooooooooooooo!

How was you time boys? Sorry I missed the fun. Never ride from the circus...should be a treat not waiting in a queue....

Here's my proof...

  • red is uphill (4% and above)
  • blue is mostly flat(ish), gradients of up to 2%;
  • green is "all downhill.

The "brown" coloured section is a downhill at 12km and an uphill at 24Km.
