Getting Dropped

I also ride on my own 99% of the time and I've never dropped myself yet.

But likewise, I just love being on the bike - MTB or ROAD. Last week I rode MTB here with a guy visiting from Tenerife. He does MTB guiding over there. I dropped him on every hill we climbed and he shat all over me on every descent. He was on an Enduro bike and I was on a XC bike - so I guess it was inevitable - but perhaps a really classy rider with a XC bike could have kept up?

On the road - I'm ok if I tuck in but I'll never be a solo star :-)

I can live with that.

You are giving us nothing to work with here! Help us help you :)

Tell us about your weekly training program, intensity, etc. And about yourself, e.g. age, weight, completely new to racing, raced categories before, etc.

So did Killarney last night and eventually got dropped from racing snakes.

Now during the Winter I have been consistently putting in the time on the bike +- 250km per week and I can clearly see how much I have improved during this time - power and PB all round. But that being said ,being dropped is never a nice feeling- Some would say you can compare it to a break up  , all the emotions ,frustrations ,sadness and depression. I would say my biggest comfort for this is my love for the sport and how much I actually enjoy riding my bike( which is also a problem cause that prevents me from hurting myself on the thing I love)

That being said, I noticed other riders doing double the amount of KM and also getting dropped, even before I decided to pop.

So the question , how do you deal with the disappointment ? Training  15+ hours a week 500km just to get dropped in 10min?

How do you come back and get same result week after week?

Happy Friday

You mention more power, so does that mean you have a power meter or train with a PM? The rest of your OP doesn't indicate that though.

If yes, then check your peak power for 5-sec, 1-min, 5-mins and FTP (20 mins). You may be capable of riding fast, but if you can't push out the watts when required (repetitively) then there's half the problem.

dude just accept that there will always be some guy who is faster than you and then a guy faster than him and then there will be Froomey .....its just the way the universe is.. :whistling:

Killarney is good training, but damn it is hard. I can do a 400 km ride at ave 28-29 kph but blow up at Killarney. That is just the way it is. To be able to RACE means you need to train to race.

Old saying, but still true today. Most peeps train at around 85%. This is worth ZIP! it just makes you tired. You need structure, longer is not always better, well sometimes it is...... So my wife says.

But really you need to train to race. Intervals, tempo, hill repeats AND easy rides AND Rest. otherwise you get like me.

Can go long slowly. It means nothing.

1. Getting old?

I have excepted I will not have as many KOM's as before. Soon I'll have none.  No matter how hard I train

Soon my son will kick my ass.

2. Genes/talent?

No matter how hard I train, what bike I ride or how many times I  fall, I'll never be Minnaar or Contador.

And after some seasons at the top,  age catch even the best genes/talent.

An appropriate interval program within a structured training program is needed in order to race short, high intensity sessions.

A good coaching program will help you balance work, rest and recovery. If you need one, CleatsAndCleavage can send you a photocopy.

Otherwise, do what I have resigned myself to. Only ride on your road bike with people on SS MTBs who are also prepared to hang back so you don't get dropped up the hills.

Did you warm up before the start? Back in my roadie days I found that if I started in the B bunch, when the scratch bunch came through I could hold on no problem, but if I started with the scratch bunch I'd get dropped on the first lap 4 times out of 5.

Whether or not I rode to the track made no difference - the wait between arriving and starting was enough to cool down enough that I'd have to warm up all over again.

As per what many others have said, If you want to race, you must train to race. BUT you need to look at the TYPE of race as well. Kermesse/Criterium racing is flippen high on intensity and full of surges. If you dont train for that you can expect to get dropped faster than lance Armstrong's blood bag when the dope testers arrive!

If you are at the back you suffer even more due to the concertina effect, so stay on the front of the group.

HIIT on an IDT (but not stagnant boring work) is a must! Mx it up a lot with very short recovery times and erratic surges and 95% HR efforts. Learn to ride till you see dots and throw up. If you are not up to that, just get on your bike and enjoy riding.
