Messier87 Posted November 23, 2016 Posted November 23, 2016 Can those with experience of high pressure washers shed some light on the subject for me, please? Is it really worth it in terms of time saved and efficiency? Can a small Karcher K1 or K2 actually do the job? And on the other side clean without destroying your bike? Or is this just asking for trouble and more maintenance? And I suppose usage will not only be limited to bicycles, but other vehicles and property areas as well. Thanks
Sitting@89 Posted November 23, 2016 Posted November 23, 2016 Simple answer no! I f you really know which areas to aviod i.e bottom bracket, hubs and anything with seals go for it! IMO the real value in using a high pressure hose would be exactly for getting to those "hard to reach" areas which in this case are exactly the ones that can be badly damaged by a strong jet. Bucket of water with some cheap car shampoo works like a charm 87,6% of the time, every time!
Jurgens Smit Posted November 23, 2016 Posted November 23, 2016 High pressure can penetrate your bearings and blow all the grease out, and can damage sensitive parts (think suspension). So if you do a complete service of your bike after every wash I suppose you can use high pressure. I don't even like a pressure washer on my car, if there are any chips in the paint it can/will flake them off. A hosepipe has never let me down before. Edit: Even the tiny k1 has 100bar pressure, which is like 96bar too much
'Dale Posted November 23, 2016 Posted November 23, 2016 Nope The PRO mechanics use it but they completely disassemble the team bikes on, almost, a daily basis
RocknRolla Posted November 23, 2016 Posted November 23, 2016 Buy a kit with a soft bristled brush, some clean green and a hose pipe. Water is only needed for rinsing. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Odinson Posted November 23, 2016 Posted November 23, 2016 No. Some luke warm water, mild soap, a soft brush and some elbow grease is all you need.
bikebloke Posted November 23, 2016 Posted November 23, 2016 even kleen green is a little scary around hubs etcI use it but im careful and I spray it onto a brush rather that straight onto the bike as above high pressure every bad idea get a chain pig and a brush (clean drivetrain and chain )but avoid washing the bike too often just my 1 c
porqui Posted November 23, 2016 Posted November 23, 2016 Even a garden hose with a nozzle should not be used

Thanks sure use it on your bike, your bike shop will love you $$$$$$
NotSoBigBen Posted November 23, 2016 Posted November 23, 2016 I have seen with my own eyes high pressure cleaners used at bike shops, and not particularly carefully ..... Sent from my LG-D958 using Tapatalk
Flashfozzy Posted November 23, 2016 Posted November 23, 2016 It amazes me the amount of people who says NO NO to HP wash but at the end of most races the que at the bike wash is longer than the beer tent! With an unskilled / Uninformed person in control of 150bar washer!
Dubbin Posted November 23, 2016 Posted November 23, 2016 If you do the next thread you will start is: "my bike is making this strange clicking sound" and the one after that will be: "where can I source a set of replacement suspension bearings" So no.
