26" Dual Suspension: Merida vs BMC (FIGHT!)

Hey there .

Between the two,  be aware that the BMC has the lowest end suspension, the ride quality of fox on the Merida frame will far out preform the BMC with poor suspension components.  Feel free to call us if you need any other assistance.

It is actually the BMC that has the Fox suspension, which is why everyone is recommending the BMC.

Yes, was wondering what was going on there...

I've decided to not go with either for the time being. The BMC is very classic but It doesn't make sense to risk having to source BMC specific parts from Europe. I'm going to keep it simple with a 26" hardtail that has a local presence and cheaper service costs.

Thanks guys, I hear you on the 26" front but my understanding is that you can get a waaay better spec'd bike in 26" and even decent dual suspension.

exactly....and it's just the thinking against this sort of thing which keeps high end 26ers at lowe prices on 2nd hand market. so let's keep quiet about it shall we?!

It's funny, I was just saying how people are quick to say 26" is dead but not so quick to drop their old 26er prices. I mean they're obviously priced way better than their newer 29" counterparts but I still think 5/6/7 year old bikes are more expensive than they should be. They wouldn't get half their asking price from any 2nd hand reseller. Thanks Gumtree and co...

Obviously the people selling them need cash for their new 29ers. It's a cruel cruel world.

Hi everyone,

I need some advice on comparing the following two bikes:

1) Merida One-Twenty 900 D (2012)

  • Fork Manitou Minute TS 120
  • Rear shock X-Fusion O2RL
  • Wheels Alex Rim TD17
  • Front derailleur Shimano XT
  • Rear derailleur Shimano XT
  • Shifters Shimano SLX
  • Brakes Shimano BR-M505
  • Crankset Shimano SLX
  • Tyres Kenda Slant Six
2) BMC Speedfox SF02 (2011)

  • Fork Fox F-Series 120mm
  • Rear shock Fox Float RP2
  • Wheels DT Swiss
  • Front derailleur Shimano XT
  • Rear derailleur Shimano XT
  • Shifters Shimano SLX
  • Brakes Avid Elixir
  • Crankset Shimano SLX
  • Tyres Onza Canis (x1) Not sure about the other
Both are in good condition but Merida the mintest of the two.

All opinions welcome and appreciated :)

BMC without even 1 second of hesitation.

Manitou forks....ok to service but not easy to buy the bits that fall off in SA...BTDT.

DT Swiss wheels way superior.

Both bikes would benefit from an upgrade to SLX or XT brakes (or Guides if you must).

Just one word of advice. Go an check physically out the different bikes you are interested in. Check the BB, brakes etc and see if you happy with the overall condition.

What exactly is BMC specific on the bike? I can't think of anything. You should be able to find bearings, bushes, headset bearings & BBB's without a problem.

Ya you're right. I should have been clearer. I'm talking more about damage to the back triangle of the frame or the piece that connects to the rear shock. I'm unlikely to break either of them but it would haunt me in the back of my mind. But it's also just about not needing the classy design etc.

Eh what? Rp2 is a solid shock (pre CTD shaite) and the f series is a good fork. Manitou are poorly represented here vs the abundance of Fox service centres. Plus the BMC's DW suspension design is superior to those early 120s.

Then the wheels seal the deal
