Nay, the point is you don't need to pay a licence fee to get rights to use the road, you already have the rights. Whether people respect that you already have those rights are a different kettle of fish.

Yes, your picture is correct if you want to argue about who's right and who's wrong. But that's not the point I'm making.

My Response. I've never bothered responding to an article on N24 before.

What a well thought out and considered article. I just have a few questions for the sake of clarity.

1. Would the licensing system be for vehicle and rider? Surely it would. Same rules for everyone right?
2. Do you know of any countries in the world where a cycling licensing system has been successfully introduced? If so did it make a meaningful difference to cycling deaths?
3. Give or take. My SUV weighs about 2 tons and the license costs about R1000 per year. A bicycle weighs 12kg. R6 seems a bit low for a license
4. What about the thousands of people that commute by bicycle because they are too poor to afford cars? Should they also get licenses?
5. What about international cycling tourists? They would stop coming out here for sure. But who wants their money anyway right?
6. What about kids? Will their bikes and will they also be licensed? Surely. Same rules for everyone right?
7. We should extend this to skateboards and those horrible little scooters too.
8. What if I kill an unlicensed 9 year old? You did say the driver shouldn’t be charged right?
9. And If I kill an unlicensed cyclist whilst on my phone? Hey. He had no license.
10. If I kill an unlicensed cyclist. Can I claim damages from his/her family? Washing brains and blood from my big SUV's grill is grim work. Someone else should pay.

The problem with the internet is that it gives idiots like you a voice. And even worse than that. It gives you an audience.

This is how anarchy starts. Ignoring the rights of others.

The more we justify the fact that we may be killed for enforcing our rights the sooner we have no rule of law.

Look no matter how we try and paint it, lots of cyclists are not angels and behave in a way that pisses other road users off.

We must fight the battle of educating the motorists about cyclist rights, and we must also address the morons amongst us.

People don't care about your rights if you act like a lawbreaking idiot.

We can't preach rights if we piss on the laws.

I enforce my rights by riding my bikes on the roads every day of the week ...doesn't change the fact that I might be killed at any moment in contradiction of my rights .

enforcing your rights is all well and good but reality bites....

100% agreed. Unfortunately a lot of our problems start with us (or rather, our kind, not adhering to the laws, but also demanding their rights in the same breath).

Problem comes in when you are wanting to stay alive. In Cape Town 95% of the accidents are when you are riding alone or single file. Driver thinks, I can squeeze by or overtake quickly. Then gets it wrong and another thread on the bikehub.

When riding illegally far fewer cyclists get killed. When you have to overtake a group of 20 riders 2 abreast, you end up treating it like a car and doing so when safe.

Yes its not ideal but you end up not dead.

Well said , I wanted to say something similar but with my diplomatic skills it would have came out wrong .

When I'm dead I'm dead. I will not feel anything any more.

And I'll certainly not be having conversations with a theoretical god that in all likelihood does not even exist. But the theological debate is one that had no place on the hub.

Just to add ... no-one has come back to confirm they didn't have any conversations yet. But we can be sure of one thing, WE WILL FIND OUT ... one day.  :whistling:

the brannas and coke be strong with Neil. Too strong.

(disclaimer - I do not have anything against brannas or coke.)

(2nd disclaimer - some posters on the hub will undoubtedly take offence at the Comic Sans MS type and the stupid faces. - too bad for them)

Notice point 1 & 3 of his little list of cyclist sins

1.) Cyclists do not obey the laws of the road and even think themselves above the law.

3.) Cyclists do not stop at stop signs and red traffic lights.

When we slowly roll over a read light when there is no oncoming traffic while the oke in his car waiting for the light sees us doing it, point n1 is what is going through his head yet we still don't get where this antagonism is coming from?

We rightly demand that motorists respect the laws but we must respect it ourselves, even the stupid inconvenient ones.
