I wish I could spend this long in Zone 5 -

Could it be that your heart rate zones are not accurately set up on your Garmin?

Just checked Garmin Connect;

Zone 1 - 5:48min

Zone 2 - 10:43min

Zone 3 - 32:07min

Zone 4 - 29:13min

Zone 5 - 1:14:26min (jeeeeeeeezzzz)

Surely running and swimming would maintain and increase cardiovascular fitness? Both are probably more efficient at this than cycling, so it does not make sense that this is due to lack of fitness.

Do you experience the same high hr in these activities as well, or is it just cycling?

160 ave is normal for me... i still feel fine, be it a 5k run or a 70 mtb.

Eventually had a full check up at a cardiologist and turns out im fine, my hart is strong and it bests fast. Thats just my heart. But my hr drops very fast if i get off bike or stop running. And i only feel like im working hard when it gets to the late 180's to 190,

Ps im turning 37 this year and it regularly tops way over 100%

I dont understand, surely if you regularly go over 100% then whatever you regard as 100% is too low?

The traditional formula for 100 and the vitality formula... my real 100 is probably around 215

According to Joe Friel (use Google to find out who he is), it's better to use LTHR (Lactate Threshold HR) than maxHR.

As aerobic fitness changes, so to does your max HR (MHR).The opposite is true if you do less training, the MHR goes up.

He believes LTHR is more reliable when setting HR zones.

So, do a quick (30-min) race pace effort. After 10-mins, press the lap button on tour HR monitor/device and take the average HR after the 20-min lap.

Then use the zones he refers to on his blog:

Hey everyone,

So after I did W2W last year, I haven't spend much time on my MTB....my peak season at work started so needed to get back in the routine!

From W2W until now, I did a lot of running and swimming, but we all know you can't compare that towards cycling.

Did a MTB ride this morning with AVG HR of 160bpm.....jeeeeez that was k@k!!!!

I assume I must start with slow base rides or just get time in the saddle again, but what is the best possible way to bring down AVG HR ??? Training tips and suggestions welcome.

Sorry if there is already a thread like this, so your welcome to point me in the right direction.

Happy cycling !!! ;-)

Your heart rate never goes down .. you just go faster ... Or am I missing something?

Evening,

I do lots of stage races and would average 160+ over 5+ hours - was brutal!

Then tried the Phil Maffetone method - +/- 6 weeks of training, and I am now averaging around 145.

Trust me - train to your target rate and push when required. The results have been awesome. And I did see the specialists, take the tests and all that - all was fine... I simply used to push / train and race way above the target HR.

Already after 3 weeks my Strava sectors had improved.

Google it.
