I heard on the radio this morning that a cyclist was knocked down on Hendrik Potgieter Rd in Little Falls, does anybody know much about this and if they are ok?

We need more cyclists. Not lycra clad weekend warriors, but people actually commuting on a daily basis.

Motorists/pedestrians often don't see us, they aren't used to looking out us.

On Sat I encountered a group of riders overtaking pretty dangerously on a fast corner, a pedestrian stepping into the road to take a photo, had to evade a car on chappies that was avoiding an oncoming cyclist, almost got taken out by a cyclist not being able to clip and stepping out into the road, a cyclist trying to get into a pedestrian crossing waving to his friends.

Perhaps stiffer fines would do something to make motorists more vigilant, but what about the pedestrians and non-commuter cyclists with zero spatial awareness?

We need more cyclists riding all the time, regardless.

Dunnow Details, sadly the cyclist did not make it.

Saw EWNtraffic posting about it on twitter

Read my post on page 8 on this thread to try and achieve your 1st statement.

So from the TOGH thread the cyclist was fined R1300.

Cones were placed on the road to demarcate the turning.

If this was a bunch race and not a TT, I wonder if a fine would have been given.

It just makes no sense..as I understand it wasn't a long stretch of road where the incident took place.. they should've just put cones/anything along the road forcing the riders and support cars to stay in the left lane.. that way there is no confusion about where you can or cannot ride and other vehicles would've seen to stay out of that lane..

This whole thing going was avoidable

Like Gerald said a comedy of errors.

It could've ended really bad, fortunately it didn't. But it should never have happened.

Totally Segregated lanes the only way to go, in general.

I spent a year commuting for East London to South Ken every day - it was a daily dice with death especially at the 'round abouts'  Hammersmith in particular.

Many classmates said they would love to be cycling in everyday instead of the Tube but it was just too dangerous.

Just need an adaptation for SA.

They will have to put a curb/island on the centre-line of the bike-lane.

A lane must physically be to narrow for a car.

Because if a car (read "taxi") can fit into it,  they will use it, and show you the finger.

I commuted for a few years in London during the surge in the number of cyclists using London's roads and the advent of Red Ken and Boris' cycle lanes. One of the greatest dangers at the time was reduced by having cyclists come to the front of vehicles waiting at an intersection. It allowed motorists to clearly see the cyclists direction intentions when the lights changed.

There was much work done to encourage female riders to become more aggressive and come to the front as many of them were killed or injured when vehicles turned left and caught cyclists who were in their blind spot.

See the useful tips in the attached link.

Or we can do as the PPA suggests and not go outside. Rob is going to love this one

If the PPA ran an anti rape campaign:

"Dear Rape victims, maybe you shouldn't wear skirts and walk around after dark"

How did I miss a beauty like this?

"Dear Rape victims, what were you thinking being a woman?"

The stats from the Easter period this year... disturbing, to say the least:

Something like this should carry an immediate "time in jail" sentence, with no possibility of bail. The problem is that there are lawyers being paid to get people off due to a technicality.

If I am ever the victim of a motorist crashing into me please make sure someone is tasked with recovering the video from my bike, front and back, so it is easy to see exactly what happened and how the motorist took me out.

My contribution to removing one inconsiderate driver from the roads.
