Back in the good old days we used to solve this issue in a number of ways, unfortunately today cyclists are just too well mannered. The following steps should be followed

  1. ask the wheel sucker to come through for a pull
  2. swear at said wheel sucker
  3. give said wheel sucker a snot rocket
  4. make them ride in the gutter
  5. push them off the road
  6. drop your pump into their front wheel

The Boksburg part definitely explains it all.

Most of the above could cost you in the end.

Wheelsucking is part of the game - suck it up!

If you are going to wheel suck be good at it.

Don't mess up the system.

At my age I normally explain to the wheel sucked that I'm just hanging in there sucking wheel and if I take the front the speed will immediately drop by 20% and most are then okay with it.

As for effort and heart rate I'm already maxxed out.

What I do find often is that the system is A about F - you find the 3rd or 4th in line sprints to the front and by the time he gets there he is useless instead of the front rider not staying up front for as long as he can but doing his job and falling away timeously for the next to take over.

I have and will always suck but I have also paid my dues in the past.

Wow, 20 whole seconds? And then you have the temerity to say take your turn.

Typical fun ride: 100km

Average speed for Argus for a sub 3 (less than 1,000 do this, in fact Trevor Ransom did 2:59:59 for 843rd in 2016): 36.34 kph

For your 20 seconds to be "taking your turn" means a bunch size of 495 riders.

Just for clarity, in a bunch of 200 at the Argus each rider needs to be in the wind for just under a minute not to be a wheelsucker.  Then we factor in that half the batch gets dropped before halfway and a half of those who made it through Sun Valley will get dropped on Chappies, anyone who finishes in the front quarter would have had to be on the sharp end for just under 3 minutes during the course. Otherwise they did not do their share and can be called Cadel.

In a fun ride with 100 in the batch this stretches to just under 2 minutes with no dropped riders. With dropped riders it gets out 5 or 6 minutes.

Reality is there are roughly 20 riders who do the work, 10 of them a bit less than the other 10 and there are often 3 or 4 very strong on the day who eventually ride away on a slope or into some wind.

Love it :D

What about those that Valverde?

Fine if its in a big group and theres enough legs to get everyone to the finish.

Small group of about 5, everyone should give some effort.

Then you guy that guy wheel sucking and shouting orders from the back. Joh Joh.

I agree Dale

Wheel suckers don't ever get their engines fired up and don't raise their HR.

SO NO VITALITY SMOOTHIE FOR YOU SUCKER!!!

600 points regardless of HR!

As a beginner i would have thought this is the correct attitude. I don't mind at all if any if you skinny fast okes want to shelter behind me on Sunday in paarl.

"I don't care about those that mark me... I just ride them off my wheel..."

If you are in a breakaway and you have 2 non-contributing wheel-suckers and your nose is a bit runny... And you gooi a nice snot-rocket.

Should you feel guilty?

thats hilarious ????????????????

Only done a few road races,so this wkd's race was (an eye opener) the only race I have done so far where the groups actually seemed to stay together some what.

All the others I have done ... Tour of Durban ,amashova,947,macsteel,r4v ,argus, have been split open by the first 20k 's or first climb. Granted I ride in the alphabet soup and will never probably race in vets...

I generally do more than my turn at the front but am learning quickly that ppl will happily suck you dry if you let them. So this wkd was different for me. Was in the bunch the whole way and the group was so large it became difficult to get to the front . So I basically sat and wheel sucked the whole race. And was happy with that ,or at least I thought so.

The funny part is that as much as I enjoyed the race and didn't put myself through the ringer in the process was brilliant. As I reflect back on the race I could of and should of gone to the front of the race and did my share as I felt farily strong.

I kinda feel cheated that I didn't race and do my share . So I suppose it comes down to each to there own and what makes you tick. I'm not a sprinter so to sit and wait is never going to suit me. I almost need to suffer to feel like i raced.

We all wired differently .

Pikey, I might be wrong, but were you with me in B for the last Tour of Durban? Was it you who chatted to me in the second half about the wheelsuckers not helping?

If you are able to casually chat to strangers in the bunch.......
