In this economy there is no place for getting ripped off.

I don't see why I need to spend thousands at a brick and mortar shop to get treated like a customer.

If you want loyalty, get a dog.

I have been buying online parts since 2012 for the SOLE reason that I pay 40 to 50% less than what I would pay in South Africa. Surely importers of Shimano/Campy and SRAM in the UK are paying the SAME price for their parts from the likes of Shimano etc so why do the bike shops in the UK sell their parts for up to 50% less than here ??

I support my LBS when I can but someone is seriously shafting us.

A lot of the stuff sold by the likes of CRC is grey market i.e. It does not come in to the UK through the official importers. They are big enough to buy the volumes needed to get the pricing and they are big enough to effectively warranty the items themselves.

I feel really sorry for the SA LBS's who are at the mercy of the official agents whilst being compared to someone the size of CRC.

You think online from overseas is cheaper?? PAH!

Try sending your bike to ChainReactionCycles for a minor service, ended up costing me R4000 just in shipping for a quick gear setting!!

Yeah but you got your bike back probably quicker than your LBS could have delivered and probably still riding without a days fault! That's the difference!

That's a helleva statement about your choice of LBS. I had nothing but reliability from the bike shops that I used in SA

I import the items I "need" (parts, upgrades...), got the tools I need and maintain all our bikes. In defense to LBS I think some are at the mercy of the importers too, and we know what some of the importers were fined for of recent :whistling:

True, but in this case it wasn't  the local bike shop.

I have a good relationship with them , and in reality 9 out of 10 times I get items from them at prices similar too or just a little bit more than what it would cost me if I had imported it myself.

Paying 10% to 20% more is something I typically would do for the fact that if I have any issues resolution is a 10 minute drive away.

In this instance I spoke to the shop owner about the price and If he was making R100 from the part it was a lot, the gouging here was entirely being done by the "official" agent.

I don't know who brings rockshox into the country, but if their pricing on the part is not a mistake, then they are smoking something if they think the consumer should just smile and take it.

Also the price I got online was not the typical CRC -50% special, which would be impossible for the local guys to compete with, it was inline with quite a few online shops (Europe and the States), and was not marked down.

So, just a minor introduction... I've been on the classifieds section for years and only just discovered what I've been missing on the discussion threads. So got a long way to go to become a "trustworthy" hubber by the rule of 1000.

Anyway, just my two cents on the topic (which we all know two cents are worthless here now). In many cases what makes it difficult to support local, as the OP pointed out, is the often huge discrepancy in price. I think most people would prefer the convenience of dealing local, but when cost is an issue it is hard to argue with the savings of buying online. I think another issue is the shops themselves. There are the bike shops owned / run by cyclists. They know cyclists and they know bikes. Many of them provide outstanding service and will bend over backwards to help out. And most of those shops are likely well supported as a result. Then you have bike shops owned/run by people that hardly know anything about bikes. Some of their mechanics need help just to change a tyre. You are treated like a number, pay exorbitant prices, and half the time the bike comes back worse than when it went in. Hard to justify supporting that type of shop.

What grinds me is when the rand vs all other currencies tank the prices in the shops rise within a week. Now that it's almost back to levels of 2015, prices still continue to rise. We should all just stop paying and start demanding a reduction before paying. That will enforce economics 101. But there's always someone who is willing to pay more than what it's worth.
