Cost of MTB racing....

I don't see how people can afford that. For me the most expensive is K2C purely because of the travel and accommodation costs involved. I promised my wife I'll only do 10 so this year it's number 7.

If the idea of doing the same race 10x over rocks your world then great, given that my budget is also limited I would do a race like that 2x maybe 3x times and then move on to experience different things.

Personally I would do 10x Attakwas's (also getting bloody expensive) and 10x Hell & Backs before I do another K2C...

I am only doing 10 K2Cs because you get some kind of special medal or thingymajig then. It was my first "long" MTB ride so it does have some significance to me. Way more than the Argus ever will.

That sure does suck the joy out of things....

....and that's me speaking as a CA.

Ha ha ha - c'mon, let someone else be the killjoy for a change....

Another way to look at it, would be R per m ascent. Then races like Joberg2C with some very flat stages are put into perspective a bit more. Saying that, I've done a few Sani's but will not do another one as the cost of travel etc. is way more than the race entry. I'd rather take a few extra days leave and do Joberg2C as the accommodation cost before and after the event, flights etc. is roughly the same.

My 2c

If you want to do a tit stage race,,exceptional value for money as far as stage races go

3 towers can't be beat

If you want brilliant chow, and experience a longer stage "race" expience can't beat JOBERG2c

If you want best value for money organize a group ride with a bunch of mates and stop being BEAN COUNTERS it's a life experience if you can afford it DO IT ,,,if you can't make friends and race the *** out of them and hook up for beers AFTERWARDS and repeat 3 times, boom you have a stage race with less traffic

both of those are on my bucket list - was going to do J2C this year until my partner had a v bad fall...will wait for him to get better (2 years).

So, that means that 3 Towers is a 90% certainty for 2017.

you really need to compare apples with apples.

so you get Event A

with XXX kilometers, Y accommodation, ZZ goodie bag, WWW food and H Hype = entry price

Event B

with XX kilometers, YYY accommodation, Z goodie bag, no food and HHHH Hype = entry price

You need to be subjective about all of these, but you can put a value to them - the HYPE one is the most subjective. Some people want there to be glitzy stuff there, others don't give a crap.

if it adds up to less than the entry, then you need to realise you're paying more for the hype.

if you go prepared you wont be disappointed

ie let's cost the Epic

Route: 8 days of racing, at R1000/stage (reckon trailseeker is about half that?) = R8k

Accommodation: tent + showers etc. R300 x 8 = R2.4k (not much, plenty throw this away)

Goodie bag = R3k

Food, R400 x 8 = R3.2k

Hype...the subjective one

Entry fee: R37k

So if the non hype stuff adds up to about R17k

If you value the HYPE to be R20k, then you're on point. anything less it's expensive, anything more then it's a bargain.

I'm in the ja, sure give me an entry and I'll happily ride my bike for the week (as long as i don't need to do social media crap whoring first, or during).

but for R37k, no thanks.

I'm actually doing Expedition Africa next month(holee phuck, it's soon now)

Entry fee is R10k pp. it is a lot, but if you really no what goes into it then there's value to be had,

I have been ranting a lot about people flocking like sheep to the overhyped races, but I would concede that if you live in CPT the Wines2Whales is still pretty good value for money given that it is right on our doorsteps and compared to what it cost to travel to stage races in the rest of the country.

Yip, I confirmed it in 2015 having done 5 at the time.

Also got an orange TK shirt last year for completing all 5 of them. Not sure if PPA will get it going again. They moved the date to September but have not been making much noise about it so I don't expect it to happen this year.
