Where are the gravel races?

Karoo2Coast is very doable on a gravel bike.

I did it on a rigid SS MTB with 40mm tyres a few years ago before gravel bikes were discovered. Other than the dropbars it was a gravelbike in all but name.

I may ride my Niner RLT this year.

Coming down the WaPad is a bit rough these days.

I wish there was a cross series... western cape winter cross series. Drop bars compulsary, maybe wave the tire standard to a 2.0 but have boards, sand, off camber grass turns etc..... some mud and some gore.

WC winter Cross series..... 5 willing land owners and some dedicated sponsors for the wood and a stand alone coffee trailer. I will even buy the hazard tape myself.

I miss cross racing. I lived for it in the UK. It was blood in your mouth lung busting FUN.... Gravel grinding is great but........

Our dirt roads in SA are pretty rough. They are not like most gravel roads in the States. When I lived in Colorado you could ride most gravel roads on a normal road bike. Over here a gravel bike is better with at least 38c tyres. 361 is doable on a gravel bike but it won't be fun. Coming down Rooiberg I was happy to be on a monster cross with a Lauf fork and not my other gravel bike.

Tim Brink has tried Mungu twice on a gravel grinder, and has had to bail twice (even after making almost 400kms). Our roads really are quite rough.

I imagine a monster cross with a Lauf fork is probably the perfect bike from most dirt road rides in SA: Baviaans, 36One, Seweweeks etc. Although maybe a hard tail MTB with a Lauf fork might have the occasional edge ;)

Just help  me a bit.  (possibly some will find it a stupid question)

This "gravel grinder bike" term . . .

Does it imply drop bars and skinny tires and no suspension?

Then any road-bike taken of the  tar is a gravel grinder.

Drop bars and road shifters?

So. If I take down the drop bars and slap on a flat bar and its still rigid and with skinny tires, is it not gravel grinder bike anymore?

Skinny tires?

So, if I take away the skinny tires and put 29er 2.4 tires on Wide Lightings on, still rigid and with drop bars (basically  a Salsa Cutthroat, aka king of gravel bikes),  is it not a gravel grinder bike anymore?

Rigid fork?

So, if I put on a suspension  fork, a Lauf, a Lefty or a Reba 120mm  and keep the drops and even the skinny tires,  is it not a gravel grinder bike anymore?

If I take a Specialised Stumpjumper HT, and put drop bars and 2.0 tires on it. What is it now? A gravel grinder or a Drop Bar MTB.

If on any of the above a Tri- or Aero bar setup is added, like Grant did on his Munga bike, what is it then?

Is "gravel grinding"  not riding on any monotonous  gravel district type road for hours on end irrespective of the bike?
