Yes this is a super cool groupset but is it worth getting it being a non sponsored rider. Seeing that replacing the cassette will set me back 7k. Will it last that much longer than a XT cassette at R2700

I don't believe that it will last any longer than an XT cassette ...

But your BLING factor will last WAAAAYYYYY longer than XT ....

Just saying ...

No matter which cassette ... I just can't understand that cassettes are as expensive as they currently are .... especially considering these are consumable items.

Is it worth having?

Maybe - depends on what you ride:

1 - If you need enough gearing range to ride most things - then eagle is the best available

2 - if you ride most local SA 1 day events  - then no - you don't need it - 1 x 11 or 2 x 10 will be just fine - especially if you know how to change  a chainring to suit local conditions better

Do I have one - yes - on my Spez Epic - do I have others.... yes - Enduro has 1 x 11 on it - just fine for Hakahana....

You don't know where Hakahana is.... OK - stick to 1 x 11... unless a bike comes with 1 x 12...

Mine has 2500km off road on it - Chain is still less than 25% worn..... cassette has some color worn off but looks good otherwise.

Will it last longer than XT - perhaps... perhaps not... but I am impressed with the chain wear so far.

Was told one has not to replace the full Eagle cassette but can only replace the rings that need replacement.

Not sure if this can be a good think... chain wear...

Think the next strategy will be to sell these Eagles groupsets real cheap. They make the money from selling cassettes ....

Same as the guys with printers do. Sell a printer cheap. We make the money from selling cartridges...

Eagle certainly has its benefits - that's hard to argue. It's the cost-to-benefit ratio that's the stickler.

one has to ask one self ... is it easier riding up that mofo climb on a SS or paying that sort of money for a cassette....either way it will hurt, just a matter of which hurts less.

Eagle is only worth it if you seriously need fast gears, or cannot climb. I personally ride XO1 11 speed, and I find a 32t gives me enough top end (I'm not not a racing snake), and also enough climbing gears. I could also go 34t and still have enough climbing gears, I just don't need the extra top end which does allow me to climb slowly if I want to.

In short, Eagle is worth it if you need top end and low end, but generally those that need the fast gears are strong enough not to need the very slow climbing gears.

If it's pricing you are worried about, don't - by the time you need to replace that cassette, there will be a GX version for half the price. Trickle down of tech to lower price points is an awesome thing.

My answer is no because I cannot afford it. I have a 1*12 XT on and that works great for me. Even that was a bit out of my price range so will look at SLX or other cheaper options when the "wear and tear man" comes knocking.

one has to ask, if 1 x 11 was still all the rage and everything you needed a year and a bit ago, what is wrong with it now all of the sudden?

And as others have said on this forum, if you're not going to put anything bigger than a 34/36T chainring on then what's the point really.

I'd rather have a compact 12 speed cassette - maybe 10-46, with smoother transitions between lower gears.
