Saw one the guys at gym today that completed his 8th or 9th 94.7.

He's 50 odd and enjoys the race but does it at his own pace.

Unfortunately this year they stole his Bryton off his bike when he stopped at the water point and went to the bathroom.

Referring to the other thread where bike get stolen at the bike park, off racks, etc one has to be careful.

Lots of thugs around these and they all over the place.

I always take my Garmin off my bike when going to the bathroom but leave my bike unattended and hope that it's still there when I get back and thankfully it is but I've seen plenty guys leave their Garmin's on their bikes while going to the bathroom.

I've also submitted a query on Monday. The reply was that they'll get to it, but they have a lot of them to attend to.

I checked again now, they updated the C bunch results and added my chip number as a finisher. Nothing linked to my name yet though. At least something is happening.

What do you guys think.

Was this year more difficult than last year?

For me this was the most difficult. I did 2:54 for Macsteel and 2:39 for Tshwane and I expected to get a sub-3 but I was 5min short. One of the things I think might have affected me was a lack of warmup coz for the other races I always had 15-30 min warmup b4 the race, there was no chance to warmup here because I was aiming to start far forward in the cue. Next year I should will do few races without warming up just to get used to it maybe that will help for 947.

Or take your trainer in the car and warm-up in the car park? Previously I found it worked well for 947 (but have a few come-backs ready for the inevitable good-natured chirps....!)

A number of firsts for me on this race.

1st road race in 5 years

1st time on this route

1st time on a mtb

And my slowest time of all my 14 appearances at 94.7

However I really enjoy the vibe, the spectators, road closure and even take perverse satisfaction from the toughness.

The venue

1. Access - getting into and out was simple and flowed well. We came in from Main road.

2. Start chutes and loading - seemed to be straight forward and worked well with the video screens showing when and where to load

3. Congestion on the route - I started at 8h24 and expected the road to be covered with riders. But apart from the 1st little climb and Cedar Road we had plenty of space to pass safely.

4.Kids asking for sweets - We have learnt to ignore them from previous experiences at mtb stage races. I think it creates more issues than it solves.

5. No shade and having sitting around in the dust afterwards meant we took our drinks and left immediately.

no point warming up, the wait is just too long in the chutes and by the time you get to the start you will be cold again.

just train that way, climb hard from the start on a few training rides.

I have been told otherwise before. The entire group gets the same start time, doesn't matter when your chip crosses the line. I had a query once and that was what the timing company told me. They said the start line mat is just to make sure you started in the correct group. If you started in a higher group they pick it up and DQ you. This was not racetec though.

Then I have no idea how I finished second in my batch at Macsteel when I was third in the sprint finish. :/

Crap.

That just makes the problem worse.

They are no better than window washers at a traffic light, if they dont get, they eventually go away or stop.

Be a part of the solution and not the problem.

Its not my duty to feed them, its their parents and their president. enough of my tax money goes to grants and other un-accounted for theft.

I give enough to tax and my selected charities

I am going to have to agree with you on this. It's great them kids coming to watch and support and maybe even get a spark of inspiration to become SA's next big name at at le Tour. But giving them sweets and bars only makes the issue worse. I might get some flak for this comparison but it's an apt one. It's like feeding the Hyaenas that come patrolling the camp fences in the kruger.

Soon the kids won't be coming to support or watch the spectical. But to beg for sweets and bars like the Hyaenas do at Kruger. And soon as one of our fellow Hubbers pointed out, like a Hyaena might find the arm that is giving the treat to be just as tasty as the treat itself, you will get the lighties pulling fast ones trying to take bottles or food or whatever, God forbid they try take a bottle off of a moving cyclist and cause a group of riders to crash.

They were after the farbars. Saw a few guys throw one their way and all they did was stick it in their pockets and carry on asking for a Chocolate!!! If they were that hungry they would have eaten it there and then!

Actually got quite irritating after hearing it go on for 20km's or so  . How was it that every kid along-side the road for that distance knew to say what the others 20km's back were saying to get what they wanted?

because people give them things. They should stop. Honestly. Like there should actually be a clause in the Ts&Cs of races that you don't throw sweets or whatevers to kids. Cause I only see this getting worse not better.

There is a clause like this with Berg and Bush. If I remember correctly you are fined or DQ'd if caught!

Im glad you have come across the Hyaenas, Ive seen signs at lodges which clearly say dont feed the monkeys. I wasnt going to use that example because of some libtards on this site that will turn my comment into a aunty Penny story and blow it out of proportion.

Dont feed them, they eventually go away or leave you alone.

Its great that they support but thats what it must be... dont come begging.

For me warming up is more than just warming up your legs. It's also about getting your mind and body prepared for what's to come. So even though you might have cooled off a bit by the time you start, your system is ready to go. That's how I look at it at least.

I avidly go to Kruger and various parks on holiday. Wildlife and nature has to be one of my greatest passions and is the sole reason I have chosen the career path I have.

It gets my blood boiling when I see tools giving Hyaenas or monkeys or whatever food. Cause they don't realise the minute that animal feels that it's the only way to get food, it will attack a person and then the animal is condemned and will be shot.

Obviously in this day and age we don't shoot kids. But let's play devils advocate these kids start knocking off riders and actually injuring people in the process of trying to get a bottle or choccie? They will be condemned somehow. Barriers or something making the riding less fun for the little spectators. Or even a kick from a rider or something? These are things we would rather avoid. Some people see the giving as innocent or something. But there are far greater ways and opportunities to help out. Sometimes your helping isn't actually helping but actually making it worse.
