Long Enduro rides

WTF? Are you going riding or having a picnic?

Erm.... How is mine any worse than yours?

Dates, banana, nougat bars, game, salami sticks

Vs

Droewors or biltong, nuts, coffee.

I just don't have an issue digesting droewors and I don't take any of those gels and bars. Coffee for midway cos my flask is small and it fits nicely in my backpack. Just different foods... I don't take the whole fridge.

Having g said that the furthest I've done lately is ~60km and that was on a coffee and croissant at Bootleggers on the way back.

it's Friday. Just messing

I can't do biltong on the bike. Just too much on my stomach. But somehow salami is ok.

I really like regular old PB&J sandwiches, boiled baby potatoes with loads of salt in a zip lock bag. Jelly babies are great too, and go down easy on the move. Bolton and dry wors as previously mentioned. I also really enjoy jungle oats bars, but my preference is the dark chocolate. So good for any time in the ride!! Honey on its own is better than the gels for me.

Hydration is plenty water. Supposed to be a bottle every 20kms or so, but most people don't hydrate properly. I enjoyed a nuun electrolyte tab in each bottle to help with salts loss. You can also try adding honey and salt to hot water so it mixes, then cool in the fridge for the ride. You'll need to find your own preferences of the ratio.

If you bonk and have a shop close by somehow, a can of coke always does me wonders and will recharge you for the crawl home.

Then the obligatory chocolate milk for post ride recovery.

PB's and Honey sarmies, fatty biltong, chocolate chip cookies, more PB's in a baggie, lotsa water, Wine Gums (enough)

Some Rands for a coffee or a Coke

Droë wors and dried fruit is my staple, with water in the bottles. For a higher pace ride or event I would pack more sugar: Wilsons caramels, marshmalows (both easy to cnomp and dont melt) and Lucozade in one of the bottles. I also pack a Gu or two, for in case.

I like the idea of a flask with coffee.

Trying to figure out if I did it wrong all those years ago.

For a 100km race I normally took 2 bananas and if I knew it was going to be hard sometimes fruitcake (without brandy LOL) and 2 bottles of water.

The gels/energybars we used then was used if you were thinking of a podium finish.

But the difference is you trained 120km plus regularly for a 100km race so your body and stomach get used to it. So no need to eat to get you to the finishline.

(For what it is worth).????

The longest Enduro ride I have done to date was Ezelenduro.. The hiking was brutal especially after I fell on stage 4 and fractured my thumb.

It was nearly 9 hours out there start to finish.

I took a tin of pilchards in mustard sauce, some nougat, a snickers bar and some fruit.

I also drank about eleventeen litres of CBC beer afterwards just in case I was dehydrated.

I'm not really sure if guys answering here are talking about long Enduro rides or long endurance rides....... 120km MTB Enduro with liaisons, timed stages, waiting at the start etc would take days....
